Xbox can't quite detect wired connection to router

    Hello,

I recently moved, and got a new modem & router. I connected the router (ASUS RT-N65U) to my xbox 360 using an ethernet cable, but the xbox seems to only intermittently detect that it's connected to anything.

When I look at the available networks screen, most of the time the "wired network" box will give me an error saying there is nothing plugged in. But every 5-10 seconds, the little checkmark will appear in the corner of the box, indicating that it is connected
to something, but then it will disappear again half a second later. The connectivity light on the router port blinks on and off steadily.

I have ruled out any problems with the cable or the ports: When I connect the xbox to my laptop, the checkmark in "wired network" box stays on. When I connect the router to my desktop PC (using the same port & cable I was trying with the xbox), the internet
    connection works fine.

Anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong here? Are there any settings I need to configure with my router specifically for an xbox? I find it weird that xbox can't even tell there's a cable connected to it though.

I appreciate any help I can get!

    :)

Anyone having problems connecting to COD:AW multiplayer?

Looks like it was my wireless router maybe? I use a wired connection through my router but I was experiencing 100% packet loss through it according to Xbox multiplayer connection test. I connected through wireless and now it works with only 1% packet loss. Does this mean I need a new router even if the wireless works and wired connection doesn't? Every other game works fine online when my Xbox is wired. Just a CODAW issue.

  3. wired xbox connection

My xbox won't detect ethernet cable.I've tried different cables still won't work. When I try to set up xbox live it says to use a wired internet connection make sure an ethernet cable is connected to both your console and your router or modem. Help I can't
find out how to fix this.

    Greetings rib!

There're no settings needed for your console to detect that it's wired to your ASUS RT-N65U.

Just to rule out the possibility if your Ethernet cable is defect, try connect your console with a different Ethernet cable, or, if it's possible, try bypass your router and connect your console directly to your modem.

I would suggest that you restore your Xbox network settings to factory defaults, by navigate to Network settings. From there select Configure Network, Additional settings tab and Restore network settings to factory defaults.

    Restart your console afterwards.

This is beyond the scope of your issue, but nevertheless, visit ASUS website, to make sure your router is up-to-date with the latest version of firmware.

Post back and let us know how that goes.

Thanks for the replies! But so far still no luck.

I ruled out any problem with the cable.. in fact when I bypass the router and plug it directly into the modem, the xbox connects to xbox live just fine! I guess that means the problem is with the router. But it's very strange that the xbox doesn't even
see a connection for more than a split second at a time. I tested with all 4 LAN ports on the router and its the same thing (and all 4 work fine when connected to my desktop).

I also tried port forwarding as DangerousBard suggested but it didn't fix the intermittent connection problem.

I guess I'll check with ASUS support too but if anyone here has any other ideas, I'm all ears!

    Thanks again

What is the make and model of your modem?

Can you check the ASUS website and make sure your router is-up-date with the latest firmware version.

If you haven't already, try reset the ASUS to factory defaults, to see if this method makes any difference.

Let me know how that goes.

Xbox can't quite detect wired connection to router

Sorry I forgot to mention, I updated the firmware and no difference. The modem is Technicolor DCM476.

I will try reseting the router to factory settings when I get home, and post back here tonight. (But I just set it up last week and don't think I changed anything major..)

Ok right after I posted that I had a development.. Looks like the CABLE is the problem after all... or at least the combination of the xbox/cable/router?

It's weird that using the same cable, xbox<->modem works fine, and router<->PC works fine, but not xbox<->router! I didn't have any other cable long enough, which is why I hadn't tested a different one before now. But I finally pulled my equipment to the
middle of the room to test one and it was fine.

I guess maybe the rating of the cable was the problem. I just noticed that when I connected it to my PC, the link speed was only 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps.

I'll pick up a new long cable and hopefully I'll be dandy. Thanks for your help!
