Xbox can’t display anything over 720p on a 4k tv

Why does my Xbox kick me off any game when I try and load it? I have 2 tvs and the main one I use works fine. I use 1080p with 36 bits per pixel (12 bit) and it works. But when I plug it into my other tv, the maximum resolution it can be set to is 720p with 24 bits per pixel (8 bit). This tv is a 4k smart tv but can not even display anything over 720p on my Xbox one S. It only displays the Home Screen but when I try to play a game it stops displaying it. (Also, it randomly very rarely lets me set it as 1080p on the smart tv but only for a few seconds before it stops displaying anything) The hdmi I use is fine, not a 4k hdmi, but 720p is definitely not the maximum resolution it should be able to handle. I have no idea why please help

    :)

Xbox can’t display anything over 720p on a 4k tv

Hi and thanks for reaching Microsoft Xbox gamer's community. My name is Josef.
I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft Xbox user like you.

Hope you're doing great today despite this Taiga

May i know if you tried using another HDMI cable or connecting your console to a different HDMI port on the other TV?

I’ll be waiting for your feedback
    Greetings from another Microsoft user!

Why do some Xbox 360 games run and look terrible on the Xbox series x even though they were perfect on an Xbox one

Anything changed since you last played, like a new 4K TV? Xbox 360 games were 720P, they won't appear sharp on a 4K TV.

Couple more questions about Xbox 360 on 4K TV

    Hi thrasher585,

Correct. Screen resolution remains constant regardless of screen size. However, as the screen gets larger, what does change is the number of pixels per inch. This means that pixels need to be increased in size, and, or spaced farther apart in order
to maintain the same number of pixels on the screen. Therefore, a resolution with more pixels (True 4K: 4096 x 2160) will look sharper on practically any sized display compared to a lower HD resolution like 720p (1280 x 720 pixels). 4K displays have more pixels
at their disposal to fill the screen, therefore will always look better than 720p, but the Xbox 360's hardware is limited to only display in 1080p max. Even if you have it connected to a 4K TV, the Xbox 360 will not upscale the graphics to 4K because it is
    not capable of doing so.

Bottom line, an Xbox 360 will look better on a 4K TV than a 720p TV but will not display true 4K resolution due to hardware limitations. Any device on a 4K TV will look better than on a 720p only display because of the amount of pixels available.

Also just a reminder going forward, please do not create duplicate threads and instead continue any conversations on your

Netflix: No UHD on XBOX One S

That's the issue right there, Prezdead! My TV auto detects the resolution being put out by the source and sets it accordingly. There is no way to set my TV's HDMI input to display a certain resolution regardless of what the source is putting out. My Android
box and Roku 4 put out a 4k signal when I enable the resolution they should output is 4k. Unfortunately, The XBOX One S doesn't seem to do that.

When I do the video test on the XBOX One. My TV doesn't even flicker. It just pops up that it failed everything, which is incorrect. If I change the resolution on the XBOX One S to 720p, then it flickers and my TV changes the display to 720p. If I change
the XBOX One S to display 1080p, then the TV flickers and changes the resolution to 1080p. If I try to change the XBOX One S to display UHD, it does nothing other than go instantly to the failed screen, which states none of the options are supported. Under
Advanced Video Settings though, I have 24Hz, 50Hz, and UHD 4k checked. the problem is, the XBOX One S is putting out the 4k signal because the test says the TV fails everything and the TV will not disaply in 4k until the TV receives a signal from the XBOX
One S to display in 4k.

they should of try pushing 4k res for there new system.

4k isn't that bad. 4k TVs are $1300-$1500 (Seiki, and really QHD). They don't accept anything higher than 30hz over HDMI at this time. Sony is delivering 4k models (again
QHD) at the $5k price point with the same 30hz restriction. I wouldn't expect 4k displays that accept 4k at 60hz for another year or two.

The distance consoles are used from TVs also matters. Many people don't sit close enough for 1080p to be distinguishable from 720p. They're definitely not sitting close enough to see the difference between 4k and 1080p. When people can't even see it, why
bother packing in all that extra GPU horsepower?
