Xbox Cannot Restart Itself with External Hard Drives Connected

I have a unique power issue that I thought was due to insider OS updates but that no longer appears to be the case.

When my xbox is hard restarted/ unplugged/ or turned off when not in instant-on mode, my xbox cannot be turned on with my external hard drives connected. I have a 4tb WD and a 2tb seagate connected, both using the USB ports in the back of the console.

When my console is in instant-on mode, it turns on and off fine, which makes sense as the system is receiving power.

This error occurs regardless of if I am using either hd or both, luckily the system works when they are both out.

My xbox is plugged in directly to the wall now (as it was suggested to do during my initial dashboard support forum discussions),

When pressing the power button, a faint sound of startup is heard but is cutoff immediately, which is what clued me into power delivery issues first.

Situations like system updates, which are happening left and right for Alpha ring members, require a disconnection of my hard drives everytime, in order to ensure the system can restart itself during the update process.

Is this an issue with having multiple hard drives connected? Too much of a power draw? Is it not acceptable to have two external drives connected?

This issue has been reported several times via console as well.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    :)

external hard drive no longer recognized

    Hi nattb1974

Please go to the guide menu highlight setting and use the option to restart the console. If you do this without the external hard drive connected after the console restarts hopefully when you next connect the external drive it should work.

    Hey there, Matt!

This definitely sounds like an issue relating to the Insider Alpha ring. We are unable to assist with these issues on our regular support forums. I have ensured you have access to the Insider forums linked at the bottom of my post. You will want to submit
feedback through your console after the issue occurs, then check their forums to see if others are running into the same issue as you.

    Thanks for understanding!

    Game Won’t Download/Apps and Games won’t open

Yes i have done this. My external hard drive had 80% left of storage. But now it wont connect to my xbox. The hard drive itself has the light on and you can feel it turned on, but the xbox itself wont recognize it.

    External drive

Hello, Randle my name is oskayra I am an independent advisor and player like you I hope I can help solve your problem today

There are a few reasons why you might be getting an error message saying that you can't play games from your external hard drive. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check the external hard drive format: Make sure the external hard drive is formatted as NTFS or exFAT. These are the two formats that are compatible with Xbox consoles. If the hard drive is formatted as a different format, such as FAT32, you will need to reformat it.

    2. Check the external hard drive connection: Make sure the external hard drive is properly connected to your Xbox console. The cable should be securely plugged into both the hard drive and the console's USB port. Try using a different USB port if possible.

    3. Check the external hard drive power supply: If your external hard drive requires an external power adapter, make sure it is plugged in and working properly.

    4. Update your Xbox console: Make sure your Xbox console is running the latest software updates. Outdated software can sometimes cause compatibility issues with external hard drives.

    5. Restart your Xbox console: A simple restart can often fix temporary glitches that might be preventing your Xbox console from recognizing your external hard drive.

    6. Format the external hard drive: If none of the above steps work, you may need to format the external hard drive. This will erase all of the data on the drive, so make sure you back up any important files first.

    Here are some additional tips:

Try using a different external hard drive to see if the problem is with the hard drive itself.
If you are using a USB hub, try connecting the external hard drive directly to your Xbox console.
If you are still having problems, contact Xbox support for further assistance.
    I hope this helps!

WiFi doesn’t work after connecting an External Drive (SDD or HDD)

    Hi Antonio_Castelli,

Thank you for your post. I understand you are experiencing an issue with your network connectivity when an external hard drive is connected to your Xbox One S. To troubleshoot this, please unplug the external hard drive, perform a

    power-cycle
, then plug in the external drive again once the console has restarted.

Please let us know how this goes!
