  1. Xbox App for PC changes my monitor Gamma

As the title suggests, when I open the Xbox app on my win10 computer, after about 5 minutes, the monitor on which the app is being displayed will randomly have a gamma increase. I have a dual-monitor setup, and this gamma increase only happens on one monitor. I have repeated this many times and this is the only app that causes this problem so I'm certain that it is the Xbox App that is causing this issue.

I checked all my nvidia settings and no settings are changed. Turning my monitor on/off again does not solve the issue. When the image comes up, the gamma is still way too high. Closing the xbox app does not solve the problem. Killing all xbox services does not solve the problem. The only way to fix the increased gamma is to restart my computer entirely.

This is a really bizarre issue that I've never seen before with any other apps so this is really confusing me.

    :)

The most optimal settings are RGB, 1080p, and 1.9 gamma. Over time, I've learned that the 360 does an extra gamma conversion step after the sRGB gamma correction step. This is called Piece-wise Linear gamma correction or Xenon Gamma. It falls somewhere between
1.9 and 2.0 gamma so if you can calibrate close to 1.9 since black levels are the offset issue, then the 360's picture will look near perfect. So i use 1.9 gamma for Xbox 360 and 2.2 gamma for my PC using my LG's gamma setting.

    Yes, RGB+Expanded gives full range.

I'm unsure of what the default output gamma curve is on the Xbox 360, but games can differ quite a lot in how they approach gamma. The output gamma ramp is possibly set using a proper lookup table instead of a piece-wise linear approximation as used in the
sRGB to linear conversion in rendering.

What is the "right" display gamma is quite debated, but on CRT broadcast monitors it's been estimated to be around the 2.2 - 2.5 range if I remember correctly (ITU specifies an assumed average display gamma of 2.35). The effective encoded gamma in the BT.709
standard is around 1÷1.97, but in practice it still assumes that the display gamma is higher.

The best gamma curve is very dependent on viewing conditions. 1.9 would likely give too bright midtones, and I'd shoot for 2.2 - 2.5 instead. The 10-point gamma adjustment is only useful for calibration, to ensure that the curve is as smooth as possible.
It requires a calibration tool and software to be useful.

This is where I get the acertation that the Xenon/ Xbox 360 gamma is best around a 1.9 and 2.0 gamma:

To test this, I took the Xbox 360 Gears of War with my TV set to 1.9 gamma and the Windows version of Gears of War with my TV set to 2.2 gamma. They were both set to default brightness and post process type ingame options and the darkest details i saw on
2.2 gamma, I could see at 1.9 gamma on the respective versions.

Like I said, the Xbox 360 does an extra gamma step after sRGB correction.

    Support monitor displays already

If you list your monitor's make and model #, maybe we can help you out a bit more. The Xbox does have some issues when trying to calibrate it, like it's gamma. I have had many different monitors, and have calibrated most of them to look quite good. [quote

This still ***** me off. Somehow, Microsoft feels that people must use their consoles with a TV...for it is law. They've never openly supported PC monitors for use, as it goes against everything they believe an Xbox should be, which is not a PC. It took
years of beating up Microsoft for them to even include Internet Explorer, and going back, it took a lot of complaints before they finally implemented resolution modes like 1440x900 etc. and all they did was add bars to keep it in aspect ratio, they still haven't
openly supported monitor resolutions. So, basically, Microsoft says, "f*** all those students who don't have the space and live in a dorm, who hook up their 360 to a monitor that is shared with their PC, and f*** all those living in confined spaces who may
not even own a TV and again, shares a display with their PC. Most monitors these days don't ship with Gamma controls, because it can be handled through the graphics card drivers, like mine and setting my 360 to expanded doesn't do sh**! it still looks washed
out. Why? Because of what MS believes. There's only one game that shines on my monitor, The Orange Box, because Valve was kind of enough to implement a display recognition mode that automatically switches to you TV/ PC Monitor mode and adjusts accordingly.
I also curse most developers who don't, in turn, include gamma controls...Battlefield 3 for one. Even developers don't have the foresight to understand that these condition exist for more than they would believe. Most people use their consoles on a monitor,
why? Because we can't be expected to game on a TV and hog it up all day long while other people want to use the damn TV. Whether you like it or not, Microsoft, we are using PC monitors. Deal with it and update the stupid dashboard already. It's not hard,
we're not asking to come over and calibrate our displays, we would gladly do it our self, were the controls there.

    The Witcher 2....

To be honest, I do not understand the issues people have with the graphics for Witcher 2. Yes, it is not as impressive as Ultra settings on the PC. But I did what Elite Effect suggested and turned down the games gamma to 4 which is perfect for me. With my
custom settings on my LG 32" HDTV that runs 1080p in addition with the low gamma for Witcher 2 I have to say the graphics are on par with High settings on the PC. But I can't speak for everyone, and to each their own.

I'm highly impressed with what the developers achieved, for it being a PC port is one thing but for it to also be a successful PC port is remarkable. But each individuals T.V. or monitors will play a role in how the images are presented. So far, I'm enjoying
Witcher 2 and it is becoming one if not the most favorite RPG I've played. Bioware let me down with ME3, so I'm glad to have another great RPG to fully immerse myself in.
