If you haven't already, try out that controller with a fresh set of battery's. Does the same thing still happen?

I'd put this under the "conspicuously absent" category, along with lack of universal controller preferences.

Unfortunately g3rxx is right, there's no way.

If you have a play and charge kit the only thing you can see is that the charge light goes orange when charging and white when fully charged.

I'm fairly certain they're gonna put this in an update fairly soon considering the number of controller dropout problems people seem to be having.

Simply put: NO

There is no way to check the battery level of the controller.
