Xbox accessories app, Xbox identity provider, controller dead zone

My Xbox One controller that I use on the PC just acquired some stick drift on the vertical axis of the left analog stick. It still feels perfectly fine, but when returning to neutral, it will register as being slightly up or down. Since the mechanical feel is still good, this could potentially be fixed in software by increasing the dead zone. Apparently the Xbox Accessories app lets you do this. I installed it, but I can't manage to get it running.

The Xbox Accessories app demands that I sign in before I can do anything. First of all, it's absolutely ridiculous that I need to sign into anything to adjust the settings of the controller. There is some very basic calibration pane that can be accessed without this app, but it has nothing for dead zones. So I give in and try to sign in, but it fails, telling me the "background task activation is spurious". A separate error window also says I need to have the Xbox Identity Provider installed. So I try that.

Whether I attempt to install the Xbox Identity Provider through the Microsoft Store or through the browser, either way I'm told I "don't have any applicable devices linked to my account". There's a link to "Get more info", but it just goes to a blank help page. I don't know what to do now, but I've been annoyed by Microsoft at at least 8 different steps in this process. Please help, I don't want to have to buy another controller over this...

The Xbox support page on Elite Controller stick settings says that the "delayed" curve is like increasing the dead zone.

If you have an standard Xbox controller, you can't change the dead zone in the Xbox accessories app, this will have to be changed in the game settings, if the game has the options for it

If you have an elite controller, on the accessories app you can change the response curve of the sticks that will be kind of a deadzone setting

That is strange. I've only ever had stick drift on my old 360 controllers. I don't know if the standard Xbox one controllers have it, but the Xbox Elite controller sticks can be adjusted to have dead zones to avoid drift. Check in the Xbox Accessories
app if you can adjust it for normal controllers.

For me, adjusting the dead zones worked. Go into the Xbox accessories app and increase the dead zone range. If you have to adjust it a lot to counter the drift, you can always increase the joystick sensitivity in game to counter the dead zone.
