    XBox 360E w/OEM 500GB HDD will not play XBox games listed as compatible


    I bought a used XBox 360E from Gamestop with an Microsoft OEM 500GB XBox S HDD installed. The 360E was manufactured in 2015 and various testing is marked as having been done by Gamestop on a sticker on the console, checks which includes wiping from the HDD
    anything left by the previous owner.

    I downloaded and installed via CD-ROM the update package from Microsoft which includes the default.**** file which I understand is the XBox game compatibility file. Still, the only two XBox games which will load and play are Halo and Halo 2, the same two
    which would run even prior to the update.

    What is the problem?

    xbox 360 newer hard drive can it be used on old pro model?

    @ManumTOKYO If you have the older 360 they do make a bigger hdd to replace the one you have and same goes with the newer hdd. This would be for the newer 360 models

    This is a key so you should listen to this. If I were you I would only by MS brand name hdd because my friends made the mistake of buying a genetic hdd and it did not work but its up to you and the sites you buy it from.

    Looks like you don't have an official microsoft hard drive.There is no 120gb hdd for the 360s/360e consoles,only 250gb & 320gb.

    You must have an official microsoft to play backwards compatible games.

    Hard Drives

    Hello. You need an officially branded Microsoft OEM Xbox 360 harddrive that has the Backwards Compatibility partition on it (available by default).If you only have one of the non harddrive console like the 4GB + Kinect bundle then you would have to get an
    Xbox 360 harddrive.



    I would also point out that USB flash drives and other external USB harddrives aren't going to work because you need the files located on the partition that is available only the OEM Microsoft Xbox 360 branded harddrives.

    Hey also purchased GTA SA and had the problem of game not launching. So far deleting game and cache and re-downloading doesn't work. I tried two different 250g xbox slims and re-downloaded game onto the second hard drive using my same gamertag with the game
    still on 1st hdd, and this finally allowed me the beloved GTA San Andreas. Upon checking each 250g hdd I indeed found the 1st hdd that didn't allow the game was not OEM Microsoft HDD but blank and un-etched. The second hdd that did allow the game was in fact
    OEM Microsoft HDD with Xbox 360 etched into it and was made in Thailand. Not sure if the country in which the hdd was made affects this download but I hope this is helpful for some of you. i say save up and snag yoself a OEM 320g and party with polar bears!

    360 slim 250 gig hard drive

    Make sure you read the comments and check to see if it's official OEM and not some laptop HDD in a specialized 360 casing. These HDDs not only violate ToU, but they are incompatible with many game installs and original Xbox emulation.
