Original Xbox games that are on the backwards compatibility list will only work with original Xbox 360 hard drives from Microsoft. That's how it's been forever, you cannot run these games on knock off/fake hard drives, or even your own hard drives. They
will also not run on USB Flash Drives, or external hard drives.

USB hard drives, not even the Seagate "official" USB drive work.

Only real internal Xbox 360 hard drives from Microsoft work.

Also beware that especially on sites like ebay or Amazon Marketplace, some third party hard drives are sold.

Often, these drives do NOT have the necessary Xbox Emulator on them, so the Xbox games still won't work.

Make sure you really get an original Xbox 360 internal hard drive.

Some of the games released late into the Xbox 360's life required part of the game to be installed to a hard drive. For these games, the hard drive needs to be an internal Xbox 360 hard drive.

Microsoft stopped making hard drives for the 360 sometime in 2014. So, any site or seller claiming to be selling 'new Xbox 360 internal hard drives' are selling knock off drives. These drives will still work for Xbox 360 games but, they won't work for backwards compatible original Xbox games.

For all other games you can also use external USB hard drives. The maximum size supported for external USB HDD's is 2TB. I've got an old Xbox 360 that I play on every now and again and it has a 1TB USB hard drive.

Bear in mind that even the Xbox 360E consoles (the final model of the 360 range) are now nearly 10 years old, so it is highly recommended you install all the games you can to a hard drive. Installing will cut down on the wear and tear of those old DVD Optical drives.

You should look for USB 3.0 compatible portable HDD's. I use a 2TB Seagate on my Xbox 360.

Note that you can store and play only Xbox 360 or backwards compatible Xbox games. You will NOT be able to play Xbox One games.

Note that external hard drives do not have the files needed to play backwards compatible games on a 360. Only an official MS 360 hard drive does. So an external drive would not work in this case.

Crimson Skies is a great game and was made for the original Xbox. You say it appears on your hard drive but is it an external drive? USB? 4gb internal? Where did you purchase the drive?

Only an official Xbox hard drive can be used on Xbox Original games. Anything else or if it's a 3rd party drive (usually purchased from an online retailer such as ebay, etc) will not allow the game to play.
