    Xbox 360 won’t play newer (2010+) games.


    Original style Xbox 360, falcon based console.

    - fully updated

    I have a small library to test from, but I can install and play games that were made in 2009 and before. I can play original Xbox games seemingly without issues. I can install but NOT play any game with date of 2010+. I am currently using the copyright dates
    on the disc for comparison.

    The error I get is the disc is unrecognized/unreadable eventhough I can succesfully install to the hard drive. The discs are clean some are even completely scratch free. Any scratches are very light surface style ones and this includes games from the 2009
    era that playback without issues.

    Games that work

    Star Wars Force Unleashed (Platinum Hits) 2009

    Mass Effect 2 (new) 2009

    PGR 3 (Platinum Hits) 2005

    Halo 3 2007

    All Original Xbox Games work (example Halo 1 and 2, Burnout 3 and TD, etc.)

    Doesn't Work

    Battlefield 3 2011

    Halo 4 2012

    Assassins Creed 4 2013

    Assassins Creed Revelations 2010

    Assassins Creed Brotherhood 2010

    Halo Reach 2010

    Battlefield 4 2013

    Console also plays CDs and DVDs without issue. The disc drive and components are clean.

    Attempted fixes

    - Cleaning discs

    - Power-cycling

    - Resetting system cache

    - Formatting Hard Drive

    - Deleting a previous update and reinstalling update

    - Running without drive/ or with usb drive

    this seems to predate the switch to the newer disc format that cameout in 2011(?).

    It sounds to me that the Xbox 360 needs to be updated. If I remember correctly, this happened a few times and it was due to the Xbox / disc drive being out of date. Please verify that your Xbox 360 has the latest Xbox Live updates!

    The service device instructions can be found here. You will need to register your device to continue with this process
    and enter a serial number. The serial can be found on the back of the Xbox 360.

    I've honestly never heard of this issue. Hope you get this sorted! I just found it interesting you can't play games that were released after a certain year.
