Xbox 360 Won't Download C000 - 0185 Update

I am in a bit of a pickle. Well not a bit of one, more like a huge one; and not even a pickle, it's a pretty terrible situation. I got a new Elite Xbox 360, probably about 2 years back, and for a little while I had Xbox live. Once it ran out, I wasn't in
the position of getting anymore, so I just played offline. About 2 years later (present day), I decided it would be nice if I could get live again, that and someone gave me a card with $25 on it, and it would be nice to spend that. However, I cannot spend
that money due to my situation. So here I am, just a poor soul hoping for someone to help. For awhile I wasn't able to connect to Xbox live because there was an update that simply would not download. At first I became a little upset, but got over it. At a
later date it occurred to me that perhaps the reason the update was refusing to download was because I did not have enough storage to download it. This did make sense, as I was at the time using a flash drive with only 4 GB on it. Though questioning why any
update would need such large amount of space for a simple update, I decided that was the only possible explanation. After acquiring a 320 GB hard drive and inserting it into my Xbox, I was overwhelmed with joy after the first update downloaded. I said to myself,
"This is it, it is time for me to join Xbox live once again." My great feelings of joy soon left after seeing this update fail as well. Imagine what I felt, or, on second thought, don't. It might just ruin your whole week. Lately, it has been my life's goal
to solve the mystery of this curse. I read what the message was telling me as it popped up. "Update Failed" it told me. "Can't process the update." Okay well, where do I go from here? But fear not, for there is an error code for just such an occasion. I was
the owner of a C000 - 0185 error code. The whole error code is 40A3 - 445E - 1680 - 267F - C000 - 0185. Going to the Xbox 360 System Update Error Messages section of Xbox.com, I soon figured out that only the last 8 digits are necessary. Now this error code
really got to me, because for awhile, I had no idea what to do with it. I searched for a 40A3 - 445E error code, but I found no such thing. After many, MANY hours doing some really intense research, I discovered I only needed the last 8 digits, which makes
me wonder why the other 16 digits are there. Anyway, here's the best part: This error code is literally telling me that the update isn't working. This makes this whole error code kinda useless, because if I'm getting this error code in the first place, I'm
pretty sure something went wrong. 8 solutions were given on how to fix this problem. I have tried all 8, and nothing. I have searched the web countless times, tried numerous solutions, read so many posts, and still nothing. This brings me to where I am now.
I ask you, the person reading this, to assist me in solving this riddle. Anyone who can help, will get bragging rights for 2 weeks.

In relation to your concern, there are several factors to consider.

1. The storage area

Please note if the purchased storage file is a third party product, its design may not be compatible with the XBOX CONSOLE. As far as I am aware of, the ports on the console are made to be able to generally accept all external storage as an extension yet
still if there are unique set up where the manufacture applied to that hard drive that renders unrecognizable to the console then it would matter

2. Internet

To get the updates you need to have a stable network. If in any chance it disconnects even in a 1 second gap, some data maybe missed out and as how computer codes will work, if one is missing it cannot produce the expected outcome. Please do try to have
a wired setting for a more stable connection and also check in your latency if its more than 80-100 ms. That will cause some interference or inhibition to the transit of the data. Furthermore, you can try to do an offline update for the 360. With it, you just
need to apply the update file on the usb then plug it in the console

3.Hardware

If the above is applied then you may need to submit the console for repair. It is possible that all is good however, a certain area in the processors are not able to apply the good update to the system

Hi, could you try going to settings/ system/ storage on the Xbox, highlight your storage device in the list and press the following buttons in sequence on the controller LB RB X LB RB X, select yes on the screen that pops up, the Xbox will then restart,
then try updating again.

 

Already tried that, still nothing.

 

Is the xbox the 4Gb model ? It may be the internal memory unit has failed. Check in the storage section that the memory unit isn't showing as unformatted.

There is a way to force the xbox to ignore the failed memory unit and use the hard drive instead though in some instances.

 

Yes it is the 4GB model, though I'm not quite sure how to tell if it is formatted. It seems to work just fine, I've downloaded things onto it, and there is plenty of space, but the update still doesn't work.

 

Did you try using a USB flash drive/ cd to update the xbox at all ?

I have tried a USB to install the update, however that still didn't work. It is possible I was doing it wrong, care to explain the process?

 

It is important that the flash drive is formatted to fat32, download the update file from the link in my previous post, extract that file to the flash drive, you should see only one folder on the flash drive after extraction named $Systemupdate. If you see
a bunch of files then you extracted the file incorrectly.

Then follow the instructions as per that link.
