Xbox 360 Wheel Issues

About a month ago I felt something snap inside the housing for the the wheel. I took everything apart and found the mounts which hold the wheel to metal plate were broken. In order to fix the pieces(with super glue) I had to take off the metal plate
that holds the force feed back motor, which disengages the force feed motor gear to the wheel. Well, during reassembly I must have put the wheel gear into force feed gear into a different position because when I started up the console and wheel the wheel
was now turned to the left by like 10 degrees. I thought no big deal until I tried to play Dirt3. The car has crazy understeer when I turn right and it just plain doesn't feel right going straight, ie. I can't keep the car in a straight line without constantly
correcting it.

What's baffling me is how does the wheel know it was assemble in a different position? It's like there's some sort of leveling device inside the wheel itself and it thinks it turning all the time. I can pull the whole thing apart again and remesh the
gears to see if that will fix it, but I'm more curious how the wheel itself works as it doesn't make any sense how it knows the wheel if assembled by a couple of degress off is in the wrong position.

You probably shouldn't have taken it apart. Was it a third party product?
