    Xbox 360 updating through USB flash drive doesn't work.


    I haven't played on my Xbox 360 for a while and wanted to get back on. When I do it tells me I have to install a update or I will be disconnected from Xbox live. I start downloading the update and just as it is going to finish it says "Can't process the
    update". I try again several more times (Keep in mind that I have a hard drive that still has 207GB of free space, so memory isn't the problem here) and it still doesn't work. I am disconnected from the internet with no way to install the update. Then I realize
    why not just do the USB method.

    I already have a USB formatted with FAT32 on my Xbox anyway so why not. I go to Microsoft's website and see all the steps. I download the system update, I unzip it, I copy it to the root directory of the USB, I plug it into the Xbox and restart it. And then
    nothing... I start getting confused as I see no pop up telling me to update. So I go to storage devices and see that my USB is plugged in and recognized by the console. Maybe I did something wrong, and I do the steps again and nothing happens again.

    So now I am back to square 1, and I just want to see if anyone knows how to fix it or someone can tell me that its something from Microsoft's end as I am not going to spend 100 dollars to repair the old Xbox over some update.

    Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We understand you are having issues updating your 360. We recommend going through the

    guide for system update help    . When you tried the USB did you power cycle the console? this can be done by holding the power button on the console until it shuts off. Wait 10 seconds and then turn back on.

    Didn't work, and I have been wondering if its the Model of the Xbox that's the problem since I have a Xbox 360 E and not the more popular Xbox 360 S.

    Hey there - the solution for this error is to try installing the update via a CD or USB Flash Drive. Not all flash drives will work, so if one doesn't work, it's good to try another. More info:

    Are you updating via the internet? because if that doesn't help then you could try downloading the update to a usb drive and updating it manually.

    Copy to a USB flash drive

    If you can't connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet, you can copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive and then install it on the console.

    Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system. For information about how to format a USB flash drive, see the “Format a USB flash drive” section of Using
    USB flash drives with Xbox 360    .

    1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
    2. Download the update file.
    3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
    4. Unzip the file. If you're using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
    5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive (for example, E:\). Do not copy the contents to another folder on the USB flash drive (for example, E:\Files).
    6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
    7. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
    8. Restart the console.
    9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. When prompted, select Yesto update the new console software.

    You can find out how to format a USB drive to use as 360 storage here

    Bear in mind through that it needs to be formatted as FAT32 before you put it in your 360 or the console will not see it.

    This works for going in any direction of old to new or new to old. Providing the 360s have the dashboard update which added USB support.
