xbox 360 update via usb or disc

My grandson lives 600km away, and they have no internet. He says that his Kinect will not work, saying it needs an update.

I am certain I updated it to dashboard 2.0.17502.0 before I sent it, however, he gets an update needed.

I decided to download the latest update and unzipped the update to a cd and a usb drive.

To check that either works, I tried the same in our xbox 360, to see if it was ok before I sent it in the mail to him.

To test that the process would work, I transferred the contents of the zip to a cd.

I insert the burnt cd and turned off the console.

I then restarted it, but it just boots through live and into a screen saying "mixed media disc".

I press "a" to load it, and the process repeats getting no different.

I then burnt the same to a thumb drive, repeating the process, same result.

Either the console recognises that the files are the same and does nothing but go into the normal boot up, or otherwise the console is rejecting/not seeing the update.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

    :)

    Hi there.

You have to be sure that you copy the file(s) form the folder to the root directory of the CD/DVD/USB. Meaning that the file(s) are not in a folder.

Also when using a USB, you need to be sure that it is formatted to Fat32.

Hope that makes sense, and it helps.

    Thank you for the reply.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge I have done this correctly.

For my first cd, I just unzipped the file, and burnt the folder called $SystemUpgrade to it, and tried that in the xbox 360 drive, and all it says is "mixed media disc"

I then burnt a 2nd cd, this time putting all the files contained in the above folder, on to a separate disc, but got the same result.

I then duplicated the same on to a usb stick via the front usb slots....same result.

If I go into System on the 360, I can see the 360 shows both the main drive and this usb stick, but nothing happens.

I have googled for hours over this, and all I see is many references pointing back how to make the usb and disc, but nothing indicating how to overcome the continued problem.

    It is so frustrating......

  6. Then that means that your console has the same or a newer update than the one you are trying to install. So all is good.

Your grandson's will do the same if he has the latest update too. His only real option would be to take the whole set-up (including the Kinect) to a friends house with internet. Alternatively, I have done this in the past, take it to a local computer repair
store and ask them for use of their internet connection to update the console for $20 or so.

    Thank you again.

I wish such a simple answer that you have provided, was buried somewhere within all the reams that I have read on Microsoft's sites. I have not seen that actual answer anywhere.

I guess the real problem will be, is why it will not play the Kinect games, asking for an update. He has the games Kinect Sports Season 2,Carnival Games,Kinect Adventures,Kinect Star Wars.

The Kinect was not tested by me when I upgraded the Dashboard, I just left it wrapped up in it's brand new box. I do seem to remember it had a card or something to line up the camera with it too?

Other than connect it all together correctly, is there something special you have to do to it to originally kick off the sensor? I have seen the Microsoft video on how to connect it all etc, and that looks pretty straight forward, and understand it is all
    connected in that fashion.

The other games like Halo, shootemups and the like, all work perfectly.

    Thanks
