XBOX 360 System Update

My sons XBOX prompted him to complete an update today however when trying to download the software the system provides an error that state there isnt enough free space. I researched online and followed the instructions to delete the cache file and free up
space. However, no cache is listed in the system settings and the storage drive reads as being unformatted. The only option it gives me is to fomat the drive. He is unable to log onto XBOX live to clear cache. If someone can point me in the right direction
I would really appreciate it.

Cannot update xbox live

Reject automatic update, sign in to XBOX Live and check if update automatically starts.
