When you say storage device are you referring to the USB with the update or your internal hard drive?
If it's the second, may I know if your hard drive is one licensed officially by Microsoft?
Also, which troubleshooting steps you have done so far to fix this?

I suggest clearing your Xbox's system storage cache if you haven't already done so and if that doesn't help then you may need to roll back the recent update since you mention it stopped working after a system update.

If the update started and then stopped, I don't think its a connection issue.

I'm not sure if the other methods of update will work if you can't save the update to the hdd.

You might have to get another hdd.

I have used the USB method myself to resolve the error code you are getting on a few friends consoles.

Ehm, see if your HDD is connected properly. If it is and you're still getting the error try this link and install the update manually with a flash drive.
