XBOX 360 suddenly can't connect to a HD ready TV, only full HD

I have been playing with my xbox on my HD ready for several years, but for a couple of weeks a go I went to a friend of mine and connected my XBOX to a full HD tv.

Later, when i went home, the xbox wouldn't connect to my old HD ready TV again (?).

I've tried different HDMI cables, and different HDMI ports on my XBOX. If I connect it to our familiy full HD TV it works perfectly. And I've tried other HD ready TVs as well,

and it doesn't work. The restart trick "Hold RT and Y" does not work. Lowering the resolution in "blind" is also someting I've tried, without a good result.

It seems like my XBOX is stuck on full HD, what should I do?

    :)

    HD TV question.

So my dad was going to get me a HD TV. I was wondering what's the difference between HD ready and Full-HD. Googling it quickly said that HD ready is 720p and Full HD is 1080p. Is there anything else to it? And is there a notable difference when playing
on Xbox on a HD ready vs Full HD? I intend on getting a 32 inch TV, if size has any relevance to the question.

  4. XBOX 360 suddenly can't connect to a HD ready TV, only full HD

    Hi Myhreee,

I have experienced this exact same situation. I usually use my console on a 720p HDTV and one day I took it to my parents who have a 1080i HDTV. When I returned home I could no longer see anything from my console! So I had to blindly do the following:

This is under the assumption that when your Xbox 360 boots, it automatically signs into your account.

    • Turn on your console
    • Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller once
    • Press the Right Bumper at least 2 times
    • Using your D-Pad, press down 3 times
    • Press A - you are now in Console Settings and just selected Display
Now you have two options and this can be hit or miss - the first is to press A again which puts you under HDTV Settings. The following options under this section are:

    1. Optimal Resolution
    2. 480p
    3. 720p
    4. 1080i
    5. 1080p
    6. 1024 x 768
    • Alternatively you can avoid that menu and use your D-pad and go down 4 times. Press A and that opens up Display Discovery. Press A again to Enable this feature.
One of these two steps will work. It's simply hit or miss. I would go with the first option and try going under the HDTV Settings. One of them is bound to work and that is how I was able to get back to enjoying my console after a weekend on a better HDTV
than mine XBOX 360 suddenly can't connect to a HD ready TV, only full HD ;)

Please let me know how this works out! - BOM

The only solution is to reset the resolution. Try the following again (follow it carefully):

    1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
    2. Turn off the console.
    3. Turn on the console.
Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn on the console by using the Guide button on the controller. Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller will have the upper-left light illuminated.
    4. As the console starts, on the controller, press and hold Y while pulling the right trigger. The display settings are reset to the default settings, and then the console automatically restarts.

    BigOut Machine,

thank you for your answer, but it did not solve my problem.

I don't think I'm doing it wrong, I've tried it at least 10 times. As I mentioned in my first post, the Y + RT reset does not seem to work for me. The XBOX just does not restart. The lights "spins" a couple of times, but it just runs as normal afterwards.

While I was desperately Googeling this problem earlier today, I found that this is a problem for many. Reseting it blindly or doing the startup reset doesn't work, and it always results in a XBOX admin telling you to send the XBOX in for a repair.

    Any other suggestions though?

  7. Well I would certainly not recommend sending it in for repair! Any chance you could bring it back to the HDTV that you were using before and then changing the settings (so that essentially you won't be able to see the console on that HDTV but will when
    you return home)?

I need to reemphasize that I have done this blindly with my 360S and it is possible. I forgot that when you choose each resolution in the steps that I recommended, you have to press A to confirm if the settings worked. So in this matter you should do each
resolution and when the screen is obviously still black, reboot the system, go back in and blindly select the next resolution, etc. I
guarantee you will get your screen back. I just completely forgot about the confirmation and the need to press A if the resolution worked. Except like I said, you cannot press A if you cant see the confirmation, nor would you want to. So
basically your looking at 5 reboots maximum since we know that the first resolution choice failed.

    Be patient.

Also, don't press A if the screen is still blank because it closes the menu if I recall. Just reboot, follow the steps and use the D-pad to go down to the next resolution. It will eventually work.

That was my thought too. Our familiy TV in the living room works, so I changed to 480p (?) while beeing connected on that one. But for some reason, I still get no signal trying to connect to the old one again. Tried it two-three times..

What exactly should I set the resolution to? I just assumed to pick the lowest, but maybe I'm wrong?

  10. I would go with 1024 x 768. Have you also attempted using Display Discovery? You may want to select that with the HDMI cable disconnected first and clear your cache if you go that route.

  11. I have a new suggestion: Hold the power button on the front of the console down for about 10 seconds. (The lights will flash several times.) Do not use your controler and make sure the console is off prior to trying this.

  12. I should have said, hold the power button on the front of the console UNTIL the lights flash several times. This should reset the video input. Try it first with your console connected to your HD ready TV and if that fails do it a second time while the
console is not connected to any TV, then plug it in while still on after performing the said process.
