Xbox 360 S possibly got fried. Any fix?

I have an Xbox 360 S. It worked fine up to about... now. The old power supply cable went bad, so we grabbed an even older one from a 360 that didn't work. We didn't realize that power supply had a bite in the wire. The 360 worker fine until we moved the cord a little to shift the 360 and the whole thing just died. The 360 had a lighting quick *Click* sound or sparkle and shut off. I know from a hotwiring accident a couple years back, that individual wires touching inside the main cable can fry the appliance it runs to, and we presume the bite in the power supply just kinked wrong and the wires inside must have touched.

I was going to replace the internal power supply with the one from the older 360, but I couldn't recognize any power unit inside.

Basically what I need to know, is what exactly gets fried when a bad voltage hits the console? And is it worth even trying?

Unfortunately, it is hard to pinpoint what exactly could go bad when your console is hit with an overvoltage. Usually, there are devices that are used to protect the hardware from overvoltage, but depending on how high the voltage was, not even that could have been able to withstand the voltage spike. Given that your console is an Xbox 360 S, you should be able to test with another power supply unit (keeping in mind that the power supply from the Xbox 360 Arcarde consoles, which are white, aren't compatible with the Xbox 360 S). A good idea would be to take the entire console and power supply to a console repair store (or even computer repair store) that can work with this kind of device.

Hello ElectronFix, have you had a power surge at all while the ethernet cord was connected to your XBOX 360? If so it's quite possible that the Ethernet port on the XBOX 360 is fried and needs to be repaired. Alternatively if you have an XBOX 360 Wireless
Adapter you can try that out or if you have the XBOX 360 S it has wireless built into it. Let us know if that's the case. Thanks

Dont panic, this is happening to thousands (possibly millions) of people.

If microsoft's new update fried all of our hard drives, Im sure they will deal with it accordingly. Or there will be a lot of people buying ps4's next year.

Lets hope it is a problem that can be fixed without a recall.

As long as you use an official Xbox 360 S hdd in any model Xbox 360 S you are OK. It's possible that your original post was misinterpreted as promoting the use of an Xbox 360 "Classic" hdd in an S model, which a) would not be possible unless you were to
mod the hdd module and b) if you DID mod a Classic hdd to fit in an S console you would be in breach of the TOU.

I don't believe anyone is suggesting that using an official, unmodded, un-tampered with Xbox 360 S hdd in the hdd slot of a Xbox 360 S 4GB model would be in any way breaching the TOU.

Xbox 360 S possibly got fried. Any fix?
