    We purchased an Xbox 360 S console about 3 years ago. For some reason we never added an extra Drive. My daughter had a new game that needed 20GB of storage. No problem!! Purchase a hard drive.

    - Off to Walmart and purchased a 500 GB hard drive compatible with the Xbox 360 S model.

    - Came home, followed procedures and installed new drive. everything was simple and fast.

    - Turn on Xbox 360. Error code E68 appears after about 40-60 seconds. Hmm

    -Turn off Xbox. Remove drive. Reboot.

    - Error code is gone. Must be drive.

    - Drive connections look Ok. Cleaned dust out of Xbox slot, blasted air can at connection to remove dust.

    - Put drive back in system and reboot. Error Code 68.

    -Went online to research. Everything suggests that I hav a bad drive.

    - back to Walmart. Exchange drive for new drive.

    - Go home and install new drive. Error Code 68.

    Question: How the heck do I know if I have purchased two bad drives in a row or IF the hard drive connection in the Xbox is the problem?

    HELP!!! Should I go back and get a third hard drive?

    BTW, how do I find out if the system is patched to the latest software?

    Your harddrive could be fine but your Xbox might need a repair, I suggest reading this page

    HDD partially corrupted? Is that even possible?

    E68 suggests a system error with the console. You should contact phone support for more assistance with that.

    Are you certain the hard drive is pushed in completely? Please try putting it back in the console and make sure that it isn't loose.

    Do you have any friends nearby who have a hard drive they can put in your console to see if you still get the same error?

    If nothing works then you may need to send the console in for a repair.

    A few things. All hardware is prone to malfunction. Look at reviews for laptops and desktop hardware components on Newegg. It always seems that hardware is malfunctioning.

    Back to your issue. You are one of the unlucky few to have an issue. The Xbox 360 S has solved the issues. Anyway, you have an E68 error. Which is an extremely rare error for an Xbox 360, even the original launch consoles. The E68 error is an error with the
    Harddrive. Check to make sure the HDD is properly connected. It may be an internal connection issue or overheating of the harddrive which in that case either go back to the retailer or setup a repair with Microsoft, you are under a 1 year warranty.

    It may be that all you need is a new HDD. However, purchasing one on you own is expensive, hence taking advantage of the warranty.
