    Xbox 360 S 4GB Dashboard loads forever


    I have recently setup my Xbox 360 S again to play some older games I have. I noticed the Xbox 360 was much slower than usual and would freeze constantly. Eventually after troubleshooting for days, the problem has become so bad my Xbox 360 S dashboard never loads. I can access the Guide menu when booting up the device but the spinning wheel never stops in the background.

    I have an Xbox 360 S with 4GB of internal flash memory (removed the HDD)

    • I have attempted to use a flash drive to update my Xbox, but it never even prompted me to update the system.
    • I have opened the Guide -> Held right trigger -> pressed Y but it just goes to a black screen.
    • If I try to access anything from the Guide menu the Xbox freezes.
    • I have removed my HDD and tried putting it back in or leaving it out while booting (same results).
    • I have hard rebooted my device.

    Everything works without the 4GB memory chip I removed. I tried plugging in a normal USB to install any updates on, but the Xbox 360 complains about it not having an official Xbox storage unit. I'm not sure if I can buy an official Xbox 360 S HDD expansion and install all the updates on that instead of buying a new 4GB internal storage chip that I removed.

    I'll probably buy a used Xbox HDD on ebay and give that a go without the 4GB internal storage chip to see if it works or not.
    Worth a try. Whilst I was looking into this yesterday, I did see mention of the slim HDD working fine with it...whether that was the XB1 slim HDD or not I don't know. Might be worth doing a bit of research

    I have tried most of those options already.

    I suspected the 4GB of internal memory was corrupted some how, so I opened my Xbox 360 up to see if that was replaceable.

    After opening the device I found the 4GB of internal memory and removed it and booted the device without it. My issue was solved immediately, but i had no storage devices to save anything to. The dashboard loaded immediately and even asked to install an update. I could access everything without it freezing.

    Do you offer replacements for the 4GB internal memory module? Or would leaving that chip out and using an external hdd bypass that memory entirely?

    Just to update anyone else with this issue or who just wants to know in general. I have purchased a used official 250GB Xbox 360 HDD for my Xbox 360 Slim on Ebay for $25. I still have the 4GB memory removed from my Xbox that was causing issues before due to corruption, and installing the HDD allows for me to install all updates! So if anyone's 4GB Xbox 360 S has a removable memory chip like mine, and also has an official Xbox HDD, I would suggest removing the built in 4GB memory and try to install any system updates to your HDD instead.
