XBOX-360, Rear USB ports do not recognize USB-Memory Sticks

RE: XBOX-360 S (?), Rear USB ports do not recognize USB-Memory Sticks

+ I've searched the internet using two different search engines and have scrolled thru about 30 pages in the forums here at XBOX.com (lots of questions about resetting the parental password (@_@) ); however, I don't see anything much about this particular
    scenario.++

+ I have the Disney Infinity pad plugged into the rear USB ports, this works just fine, Mickey Mouse, 'Matter, etc... all show up in the game.

+ I have two USB thumb drives, when I plug these into the front USB ports, the lights flash on the drive and they show up in the storage devices listing; however, neither drive (one is 32GB the other is 2GB) lights up nor is recognized as storage devices.

+ So, I know the rear ports are working (all four) from the infinity pad

+ I know the front ports are working from the USB memory sticks

+ I know the USB memory sticks are working, the show up in the front ports on the 360 and on my PC.

-+ I've left the memory sticks in the 360 rear usb ports and rebooted = not recognized

-+ I've left the memory sticks in the 360 rear usb ports, shut down, removed the power, waited 10 minutes, restored power and rebooted = not recognized

-+ The memory sticks in the front usb ports are always recognized.

-+ I was going to hook up a small external usb harddrive to the rear ports; however, I'm not sure if that will do anything and decided I just post a question instead.

    :)

XBOX 360 - Front USB ports verses Rear USB ports for USB-Memory-Sticks

Perhaps I put my first thread in the wrong forum...

    http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_support/xbox_360_support/f/7/t/2097047.aspx

Basically, I have two functional USB-Memory-Sticks

They work in the two front USB ports on the XBox360 = Formatted, and have profiles stored on them - no problem.

Neither USB-Memory-Stick work when placed in the four rear USB ports - not even recognized on the back USB ports, as in the little light doesn't flash on them at all.

Doesn't matter which of the four rear ports are used.

I have an Infinity2.0 pad plugged in to the rear USB ports. I have plugged it in on all four ports, it works on all four rear ports

I've cold booted the XBOX360 with the USB-Memory-Stick inserted in to one of the rear-usb ports, removed and then re-inserted, and just about every combination of cold and warm boots and plug and un-plug of the USB-Memory-Sticks I can think of... and the
only time they are recognized are when they are in one (or both) of the front USB ports.

do the memory units work in the x360 s?

The old MUs work on the front two ports of the 360 S. The left/top one is A, the right/bottom one is B. They do not work on the rear USB ports of the 360 S console.

You'll need a USB to Memory Unit adapter. They're around $5 on eBay, shipped. If you want to fit both at the same time you'll need USB cradles as there's not enough room to fit both MUs if you use the simple stick adapters.

The MUs are counted as original MUs, not as USB MUs. You can attach and use both MUs along with two USB MUs, all at the same time.

Installed latest update, cannot use XBOX anymore! error 397D-397F-2680-0F00-C000-0034

after some more testing I managed to get the update to continue.. I inserted the USB update stick in the rear USB port, switched it on.. then after the message appeared I inserted my other memory stick in the front, and then the update continued.. seems
like it was confused finding the right memory device? anyhow it all seems to be good again now.. *sigh of relief*

    USB Ports?

Yeah, but it's not clear that the 360 S back ports are all indepdent bus. One probably is but which isn't documented and on a 360 S it's not a big deal due to having the Aux port on the console.

The front two aren't really the front two from the original console. They're really the Memory Unit ports from the original console with the custom MU interface removed. If you attach an original Memory Unit using a USB to MU adapter, the front two ports
will recognize the MU. The rear three do not.
