Xbox 360 power brick light turned red

I was playing a game and then my console shut off and I looked at the power brick, the light was red and it was very very hot. (Obvious over heating) But I am concerned with the smell it is making, the closest thing I can compare it to is the back of a hair
dryer or something similar. I didn't know if this was serious or not. I unplugged it, wiped the dust off and plugged it back in and now it's green again and not making the smell as badly, only if I get close to it. I have it sitting close to an open window
now. This has happened before a few times but I never remembered a smell that badly but I cleaned the dust out of the sides where the vents are and maybe that has fixed it but I would like a second opinion, thank you.

Power brick red

My sons xbox 360 slim has a red light on the power brick. I disconnected it and connected it to my xbox 360 and it worked fine. So I took my power brick and connected to my sons xbox 360 and he has a red light on my power brick. Any ideas? Anything could
help!

My xbox 360 S won't turn on!

I was playing a game and my xbox 360 S just randomly turned off. The light on the power brick was red, when I unplugged it, the red light went out. I have been told that my xbox 360 possibly overheated, or that the power brick needs to be replaced. I haven't
even had my xbox 360 for a year yet, and my last xbox 360 pro lasted for four years. If it does need to be replaced, would a game store like gamestop have the power brick for the xbox 360 S, I know they have it for the original xbox 360, but that won't work
for the xbox 360 S. Thank You!!

Opinions here may differ. My own opinion, for the sake of safety, would be to get a replacement because that certainly isn't something that should be happening if it is generating a really strong smell. You can find more information on power supply problems

I have a similar issue with my xbox 360. the light is on the power brick. tried reconnecting to different outlets, even bought a new power brick. the light is still red and the xbox system won't turn on. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I use to have this issue too with my Xbox 360 Slim. Is the brick of the power supply turning red? My brick would light up red and I dusted it out with an air can, and it went back to normal.

If the light is still green, you're okay!

As soon as the light turns red on your power brick, you're done.. And then you'll have to buy a new power brick.

Hello TheSliceHouse! What model Xbox 360 do you have? If it is the Original Xbox 360 and it overheats the ring of light should flash 2 red lights like this

If you are getting one or more flashing red lights on the console, please use the

Flashing Lights Wizard.

If it's the New model Xbox 360 S it should flash the center light on the power button red.

From what the issue sounds like, I believe you are having an issue with the power brick overheating. When the power brick is in standby mode (console is powered off) the light on the power brick should be orange. When the console is powered up normally the
light on the power brick should be Green. If there is a fault in the power brick ( when the xbox just turns off on it's own with no warning) the light on the power brick should turn red.

Make sure the power brick is in an open area where the vents are not obstructed as there is a fan inside to keep it cool.

Play the console until it shuts off than take a look at the light on the power brick. If it's anything other than green or orange there is an issue with the power brick and you should contact Xbox Customer support for a replacement.

If you're talking about an Xbox 360 there's a variety of reasons as to why you get the quote on quote "red ring of death." The most common is a power failure of some sort. Xbox 360 consoles can't be serviced by Microsoft anymore so I'd advise you to look
at these support recourses below.

If the light on the power brick is the one that's turning red then that's definitely a power failure/a fan failure. That can be solved by simply buying a new power brick in most cases.
