Xbox 360 Not detecting Hard Drive

My Xbox 360 Star Wars edition has not been detecting my Internal Hard Drives, I am able to attach USB's and those will be detected but any hard drives i trydont show up. I just bought a new Hard Drive so it cant be the hard drive, i have tried removing and
putting it back in the xbox and that doesnt work, I would really appreciate help, as it is getting very fustrating

yep, sounds like you used a 3rd party transfer cable and turned that drive into the equivalent of a 16 gig flash drive which is why it ONLY works when hooked up via the transfer cable, and once it is done it cannot be fixed, sorry.

XBOX:360 Not Detecting Hard Drive

Hiya,

I have an XBOX 360 elite that came with a 120 GB HDD when I bought it (used). Anyway, as I recall, the console recognized the 120GB hard drive when I first turned it on, and I whilst I was transferring files between that HDD and my older one, I had to change
them. After I finished transferring files from my old HDD (in the console) to the new HDD connected through a transfer cable. After I was done, I disconnected the HDD from the transfer cable and accidentally dropped that HDD. It was fine cosmetically after
I was done. I then removed the old HDD from the xbox (quite certain I turned it off first) and put in the new HDD but the console didn't recognize it. Then I removed the new one (not sure if I turned off the xbox first) and put in the new one but it didn't
work either. Since then I've been playing through the new HDD connected through the transfer cable. Can anyone help?

What size are the hard drives you're using and where were they purchased? If they are 3rd party drives they are not supported by Microsoft.

500gb. Bought it at gamestop brand new.

You can try turning off the Xbox, then remove/reinsert the hard drive. If it still isn't detected, there is a chance the hard drive has died.

I went to GameStop today and I bought a 320GB hard drive there. I put the hard drive into my nephew's Xbox 360 Slim E Console... and when going thru the System Settings... the hard drive was listed.

So the 250GB hard drive that I bought thru a place on Amazon.com... is on its way back to them.

I did find one thing that I found to be... amusing... online when I looked up info on "Troubleshooting" if the console doesn't detect the hard drive. They told you to do these things...

1. Turn your console off and then on again.

2. Make sure that your hard drive is installed correctly by removing and adding your hard drive back again.

3. If you have another hard drive, try it with your console.

4. Format your hard drive.

The "amusing" thing is Number 4... how do you get the Xbox 360 to format a hard drive that it doesn't detect??? Doesn't the Xbox have to first detect the hard drive... before it can format it???

If your Xbox 360 console doesn't detect an attached hard drive, try the following:

Turn your console off and then on again.
Make sure that your hard drive is installed correctly by removing and adding your hard drive back again.
If you have another hard drive, try it with your console.
Replace your hard drive. You can order a replacement Xbox 360 Hard Drive from the Xbox Online Service Center.
Note Console registration is required to replace a hard drive under warranty.

Nope, you cannot transfer data from the 20GB drive to the Slim drive on the PC. This process can only be done on the Xbox 360. Please also remember not to format the storage devices on the PC as it will make your hard drives essentially paper weights by
doing so. The Xbox 360 has a very specific formatted file system structure, if the console detects anything is changed it will either not read the hard drive or detect it as a USB which you won't be able to solve using any sort of tools provided by Microsoft.

The use of 3rd party tools on Microsoft Xbox 360 hard drives is a violation of the terms of use.
