Xbox 360 hangs when trying to sign in to Xbox Live

Hi - We've been unable to sign in to either of our family's Xbox Live Gold accounts for some time. After you click to sign in the system hangs on "signing in" and never connects. Have run network tests and everything shows as ok apart from "Matchmaking Service
Alert". Have tried resetting network to factory settings but no difference.

Anyone else unable to sign into xbox live when playing the 360 games?

When pressing both the Menu and View buttons to bring up the mini guide it just says connect to xbox live.

 

signing in says email and password are not valid but i get on windows live

I am able to sign in on windows live with email address and password but when trying to sign in on xbox 360 live it says its not valid

 

Just to add to the above - I've tried to set up a new user account on the Xbox and all starts as expected, but when it gets to "downloading your profile" it stops at around 10% of the way across and another reboot is needed.

 

Sorted (finally) by clearing the cache.
