    Hello there experts,

I'm relatively new to the xbox gaming, though it all seems to be straight forward. I recently purchased one for $40 and I believe it came with a 20gb hdd.

I was wondering if someone could help me with couple of issues here, which could be leanings for me xbox 360 Halo3 edition :)

    1. Can I upgrade the HDD, are there any off the shelf hdd I could purchase with greater capacity? is there any weblink that could help me find the compatible hdds?

    2. If I were to buy used dvd's to play games, can someone recommend any website here?

    3. I have laid the console flat (not vertical) when I had set this up, played some game and left it on, the console makes heavy noise, is this common? is there a way I can put the console in sleep mode or turn it off without having to lose the game progress?

thanks much for your valuable inputs!

    KC

    :)

You can buy 500gb hdd for the Xbox 360 from eBay or Amazon. These websites also have used Xbox 360 games for sale. The Xbox 360 does have a loud fan on some models so that might be what you're hearing. If you save your game you won't lose progress when
    turning it off.

    1. Do NOT follow Ezzn's suggestion about upgrading the HDD by opening the case and whatnot.

You can NOT easily replace the harddrive, as the original Xbox 360 hard drives have a special security sector on it. So you can't just buy a regular PC 2.5'' hard drive, as it won't work.

What you CAN do however is to simply buy an external USB hard drive up to 2TB capacity, and use that on the console. Simply plug it into an USB port of the console and in the settings under storage have the drive be prepared for storage. Be aware that this
erases all data on the drive!!

    2. We don't know in which country you live, so I can't really give a lot of recommendation. Ebay is an international marketplace for used goods. So you can surely find stuff there.

If your country has a GameStop, they also often sell (overpriced) used games.

Simply look in your local newspaper if there are flea markets or garage sales in your area. That's where you can get games really cheap.

3.) What exactly do you mean by "heavy noise"?

The Xbox 360 has a lot of heat to get out of the small casing, so there are two fans in the case that cause a lot of noise.

Additionally, some game DVDs (especially if you buy used game discs), might have become warped, and will "rumble" in the disc drive, causing additional noise.

You can try to install some games on your (external USB-) hard drive. That way, you only need the disc in the drive as a "proof of purchase". The console will check the presence of the game disc during game launch, and then stop the drive.

Most games have a save feature. It depends on the game if you have to reach a certain checkpoint to be able to save, or if you can instantly save at any time.

You can then turn the console off and continue later from your last saved position.

If you also have a Gold membership, I recommend using the Cloud Storage drive, in case the storage of your used console fails, or if you eventually want to move to a Xbox One or the upcoming next Xbox generation.

Thanks to backwards compatibility, you can play some of the Xbox 360 games on the newer consoles, and if you have stored your savegame "in the cloud", the new console can use that.

Also, if you have a friend with a Xbox 360, you can go over for a visit, and after you signed in with your account, can continue to play on his console.

    Hi aknk,

Welcome to Xbox! When it comes to storage I recommend using an external hard drive. I used a Seagate and it works fine for Xbox 360. However, Xbox 360 storage held more than the Xbox 1. I have 110 digital games on Xbox 360. Without my external drive
for Xbox One>>it could only held half of that.

As far as games, Amazon and Gamestop is will I find my old games at. If you dont leave near a Gamestop you can shop online via their website. Also, Xbox has some good deals on games so keep an eye out for their sales.

The noise you hear is common because my Xbox 360 makes noise. You wont lose any game progression.

I wouldn't;t do this to a new console, but since this is an old one and out of warranty. Just take the xbox apart (youtube vids) and verify the HDD type and upgrade. I have never done it, but I know others have.

    2. If I were to buy used dvd's to play games, can someone recommend any website here?

I have a local retail place that sell all old games, I'm sure you would have one around your area.. I have not seen a website that sells old games, except Gamestop.

I believe the noise you are hearing is the dvd drive... Some of the older models will do this..
