Xbox 360 error message Disc is Unreadable

Yesterday one of our cats knocked over our Xbox 360 while my husband was playing. All of a sudden it came back with an error message saying disc is unreadable. While we were eating dinner, we heard a horrible noise & another disc came up with
that message.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Is there a way to fix the disc?

Any help would be appreciated. My poor husband is ready to climb the walls!

Please try going through the steps posted in the "This disc is unreadable" error occurs when you use a Games on Demand game.

 

When the console was knocked over, was a physical disc in the optical drive of the console actively spinning?

Just like a spinning top, a rotating disc doesn't "want" to be moved out of it's rotational axis.

If the console around the disc tips over and forces the disc out of it's rotational axis, the disc often hits parts inside the disc drive.

In the "best case" scenario, only the game disc is scratched and only that game will show read errors (and usually a ring shaped scratch on the silver side of the disc). In that case the disc is usually unusable, and has to be replaced.

In the "worst case" scenario, the disc collided with the reading laser head of the optical drive damaging it. Which means no disc can be read by the drive anymore, and the console has to be
sent in for repair and drive replacement. So if other games with clean discs don't work, you'll have to send in your console for repairs.

 

Always safest to have your console sat horizontal, have heard so many horror stories of discs being damaged due to the console being used and moved when in a vertical position.

If it`s visible damage to the disc, ie. a circular etching into the disc, then there`s not really much you can do to repair it.

You could have a go at trying to polish it out, but honestly, with the cost of second hand 360 games these days you`re just as well buying another copy.
