Xbox 360 Elite Hard Drive error?

So, here's what happened...

Last night my brother was playing on his profile and the xbox froze, so he flipped it off at the socket.

Later on when I went to go on it, I noticed an unusually long start up. After that when it loads I'm asked to do a system update. I accept it but then it tells me that I don't have enough storage space and need at least 190MB of space, which is nonsense
because I know for a fact that I have more than 30GB free on it. I looked around a bit and noticed that the console's hard drive is 'unformatted'.

I've read online some fixes for this but I don't want to run off doing anything yet because the exact circumstances aren't the same. I read that can use a USB flash drive or this new thing I've never heard about called FATXplorer or even just to get a transfer
cable. But I don't want to do any of these things yet because I want to know for certain what's happening with my 360.

It has a 120 gb hard drive xbox 360 hard drive , the hard drive came from my old elite .

Original Xbox was supported during (only) 4 years.

Xbox 360 Elite brought HDMI outpout.

Xbox 360 S brought internal hard drive.(and external hard drive support).

....

Hi, as the hard drive is showing as unformatted there's little you can do but try to format it. The hard drive may not format or format but then become unformatted again which would indicate a major problem with the hard drive.

 

So what can I do to save as much stuff as I can from the drive?

 

I'm afraid all that data is lost already. The only things you truly do lose are your game saves unless you have those backed up on a usb device or cloud. Everything else can be downloaded/installed again.

You could try removing and refitting the hard drive, you never know your luck.

 

Would any DLC still be able to be downloaded again for free?

I don't understand this at all, it was fine until last night. Not even touched...

 

Yes all your download content can be download again, once you have your profile on the xbox storage device go to settings/ account/ download history. Everything you ever downloaded will be listed there for free download again.

Should it be the hard drive is trashed totally you can as a temporary measure configure a usb flash drive as xbox storage and remove the hard drive, that will at least allow you to use the xbox until you get a new hard drive.

Alright, thanks, thankfully I won't lose much as the only game I play often doesn't have the information on my console.

My brother however won't be as happy acceptable though.

The most I'll lose I suppose is a few saves I've hardly used and some money buying the new hard drive.

No problem, these things do just happen out of the blue.

Just a small piece of advice, you're going to see lots of cheap hard drives for sale, they are more often than not third party hard drives that are not recommended for use with the Xbox although they do work. If you can stretch to buying a genuine Xbox hard
drive then please do as it will save you hassle in the long run.

 

this exact same thing is happening to me right now

 

should I format it or try to transfer it because Im ok with trying to transfer the data using FATXplorer but I dont have a transfer cable
