Xbox 360 Elite (250GB) Backwards Compatibility Issue

So I'm having problems here.

Had an Xbox 360 Elite (250gb) for years, barely played it (mostly PC gamer). Played through and finished MGSV, never had any technical problems with this specific X360. I've been feeling nostalgic so I bought a copy of Silent Hill 4 (for original xbox)
off Amazon. I know that this X360 played Halo 2 before just fine, so I didn't think BC would be an issue.

Low and behold, SH4 did not really want to work. It is on the list of BC games. That being said, it may not be a BC issue because the problem I am having is with the disc itself... And this is when it gets weird. The disc itself looks fine, but when
I put it in, the X360 makes weird clicking and other rough mechanical sounds, and the disc reads "Unrecognizable Disc" at the dashboard. However, a couple of times the disc would boot up and the original XBOX screen would appear, but then I would get the
error "There is a problem with the disc you are using. It may be dirty or damaged" (which appears to be an original XBOX error?).

So I don't know if this is an error typically associated with a backwards compatibility problem or simply a bad disc? Is it even worth trying to get the disc replaced or should I just refund it?

EDIT: Just to add, after trying the SH4 disc a few times and listening to the rough noises, I put the new MGSV disc back in and the noises were not present. So nothing is loose.

Did your console originaly come with the 250GB hard drive or did you add one later? An official Xbox 360 hard drive is required for backwards compatibility.

It definitely sounds like it's just a bad disc. Personally, I'd try to exchange it instead of just getting a refund, but it's really up to you.

 

It could be a disc issue, or your 360's laser may be dirty. Disc density is different, and the way in which the DVD drive reads is different. So make sure that the disc is clean (wipe from the inner circle, outwards, in a straight line, never in a circular
motion), and then make sure the center XBOX holograms in the middle are also clean and free of scratches/cracks. If that's all clean, clean your laser. You can get kits for $5 bucks at most electronics retailers.

I would also try it in a different video mode. Set your video settings to 480p, and try it then. The Xbox emulator is very broken. (Seriously, it's kind of pathetic) Some games freak out in certain situations and throw out random errors at you.

I haven't tried SH4 (Silent Hill tho <3), but if everything above checks out, then likely though, it's your disc.
