Xbox 360 Dust / Cleaning Question

Hello All,

On the advice of Xbox Support, I was cleaning out a “dust bunny” (visible when the disc tray was extended) from my Xbox 360 Elite console with a Q-tip when I twice brushed a gear/piece (which had looked to me like a piece of dust) near the opening.

The system / disc drive seems to be working okay, but - given I am unfamiliar with how sturdy/well constructed the components inside an Xbox 360 are - do I have any reason to be concerned about the gear/piece being damaged, weakening/loosening in the future,
or any other effect?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Xbox says "play game" (no picture), when i hit play it takes me back to the dashboard

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your xbox 360. Have you tried cleaning your DVD lens using a cleaning disc, sometimes dust can build up on the lens and cause read errors.

Xbox turns itself on

try cleaning off the xbox emblem on the console, dust and finger prints get on to it, i get the same issue and cleaning it helps.

I have a cousin who's never cleaned his Xbox 360 and it still works fine.. I do think dust can cause problems with the disc drive if the laser somehow gets a lot of dust on it, though.

Another question:

My Xbox 360 S was a bit dusty. I dusted the outside, but I'm not sure how it is inside.

I don't want to take it apart as this seems complicated, and services in town that clean Xboxes are way too expensive ($100+).

Should it be okay, or are there signs if it is too dusty? It isn't powering off from overheating.
