    Xbox 360 download speeds slow

    Hi,

My Xbox 360 download speeds are very slow. This is affecting video streaming, which doesn't work. I have already gone through the troubleshooting steps mentioned here: Xbox Live Streaming Problems | Fix Xbox Streaming Quality Issues
but nothing has helped. See picture below. My download speed is only 0.92 Mbps. Upload speed is much higher. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey, ja1b1rd11!

I'm sorry to see any speed issues on the Xbox 360! It does look like you're wireless. Do you have the wireless adapter for the 360, or is it the 360 S or E that has the internal wifi adapter?

I'm going to list a lot of things that's in that troubleshooter if you are meeting the requirements. Since you don't meet our minimum requirements, that flow sends you to your ISP, and I just want to get a feel for what you've done. If you haven't done anything
    mentioned, give it a shot.

    • Go wired if you can.
    • Change the wireless channel on your router.
    • Do you have any wireless Turtle Beach headsets for the Xbox 360? Unplug the receiver if you do.
    • Do a full power cycle on both your network devices and the console.
      • This is done by restoring your network settings to factory defaults in the Configure Network section. Then turn off the console. You will need to know your wireless password if you do this.
      • Unplug your router, then your modem. (If you only have a router, disregard modem steps.)
      • Wait 5 minutes.
      • Plug in your modem. Wait for it to fully load.
      • Plug in your router. Wait for it to fully load.
      • Turn on your console.
      • Set up your wireless connection again.
    • Check if you have any firewall settings that could be blocking traffic.
    • Set the console up in DMZ on your router.
    • Wire directly into your modem to rule out any router issues.

There's a lot that can be done with that. If you have issues with doing any of this, post back with your network device information. I will need your router's manufacturer and model number, and the same for your modem. From there, I can help determine if
there's a known issue with those devices. It'll also help me if I need to walk you through changing any settings in there. Xbox 360 download speeds slow :)

Let me know how it goes, or if you've already gone through these steps and what else you've tried! Get me those network device details in that case. I look forward to working with you!

I have the Xbox 360 with internal WiFi. Streaming used to work fine a few months ago. I have a couple of theories.

    1. There was an Xbox 360 software update a few months ago, then streaming became poor. I don't remember the software version that streaming worked on, but it was about 6 months ago that the update happened.

    2. I may have some neighbors move in nearby recently who have WiFi routers, PCs, smartphones, etc., so there might be more interference in my neighborhood, which is affecting streaming.

  6. Thanks for the response, ja1b1rd11! Are you able to confirm the rest of the steps I provided have been completed? If so, get me the details for your network devices so that I can ensure there are no known issues with them. Xbox 360 download speeds slow :)

There's nothing wrong with my router. My smart TV that the Xbox 360 is connected to works fine. It can stream videos without any issues. Also, a DVD player with built-in Wi-Fi connected to the TV works fine and it can stream videos. I did a speedtest from
my PC and I am getting 25Mbps upload and download, so my internet connection is fine. The Xbox 360 is the problem. My network settings don't need any changing. Like I said, it used to work fine a few months ago, then after an Xbox software update, streaming
broke. The problem is Microsoft's, not mine.

  9. Thanks for the clarification, ja1b1rd11! Apologies for the delay in getting back to you; it was a long holiday weekend for me.

Once you're able to test out the things I suggested, we'll be able to look into other options we might have. Because the network speeds listed in your screenshot do not meet minimum requirements for the Xbox Live service, as indicated in the support flow
you linked to, the flow would direct you straight to your ISP. I will need to rule out your network first, and the information I provided will help with that.

I look forward to working with you once you're able to try out everything that I've listed!

    Hi,

    1. I do not have a Turtle Beach headset.

    2. I did a full power cycle. Still streaming is broken.

    3. I don't have any firewall settings.

    4. Here's some info about my router. It's a Frontier FiOS gateway model FiOS-G1100. It used to be Verizon FiOS, then Verizon sold their FiOS business in California to Frontier Communications.

Xbox 360 download speeds slow [IMG]

    5. I have 25Mbps upload/download internet service. I did a speedtest at Speedtest.net and I'm getting over 25Mbps so I meet the minimum network speeds for streaming. See below.

Xbox 360 download speeds slow [IMG]

What other information would you like? Everything looks like it's in working order. As I said earlier, devices other than the Xbox can stream videos without any issues. Those devices are on Wi-Fi and located near the Xbox. It's really hard to bring a wired
connection to the Xbox, since the Xbox is upstairs and my router is downstairs.

  11. Thanks for that detailed answer!

While doing a speed test on your PC is good to see what speeds you should be getting, it doesn't really explain what the console should get with how the console itself connects to Xbox Live. Your PC isn't the console, and doesn't connect up to the internet
the same way. It gives a good basis, though.

If you click on Firewall in your gateway's interface, is it set to
Typical or Low? If it's set to Maximum, it's likely going to cause some issues with the connection.
Typical is the best option, but you can always test it on
    Low
to see what results you get.

If that's set appropriately, do you have the Xbox Live ports open on your gateway for the console? You can give that a shot, or set the console up to have a Static NAT (which is what we would generally call DMZ). Seems pretty easy according to the manual
I found online for the FiOS-G1100 (Section 6.2 for port forwarding, Section 6.5 for Static NAT). It appears that the port forwarding section
might have a drop down where you can select Xbox (makes everyone's lives easier), but if not, you'll want to set them up individually using

    these ports
    .

It is best to have the console wired to test everything out, but I get that it can't be done sometimes. If you happen to have a TV closer to the gateway to test it out, not move it permanently, this will help me rule out the wireless side of things. However,
it's not necessary. Let's get a traceroute done on the console, though. When you go into the Network Settings, do this button sequence: LT RT RT LT RB LB. That will bring up the traceroute screen on the console. Select the top option, tracert.xboxlive.com.
It should go through 12 hops before timing out for the rest; this is normal. However, if you have time outs anywhere else, let me know.

I think this will be good places to start for now. To confirm with you, we've tested over a few Xbox 360s here in the office and are not seeing what you are. For now, we believe this to be localized either to your network or the console you own. But we'll
figure it out together! Xbox 360 download speeds slow :)

    Hi,

I'll get back to you on the Firewall setting, but I'm not trying to connect to Xbox Live. I'm trying to stream a video that's stored on a local NAS. So this firewall and traceroute stuff is irrelevant, but I'll try it out anyway.

Also, I'll try moving the Xbox temporarily closer to the router with a wired connection.

Whatever the problem is seems to be localized to this Xbox, since other devices (such as the smartTV that the Xbox is connected to can stream videos normally)

Thanks for trying that all out for me, ja1b1rd11! Everything does look great, and I'm happy to see that. Xbox 360 download speeds slow :)

Honestly, your download speeds shouldn't be affecting streaming to a local NAS. It's going through your gateway to connect up to that server, so the firewall within that gateway could very well be blocking the Xbox from accessing certain things. Neither
    here nor there now, though.

Fun fact! I found another person, on Verizon, with this same gateway having atrocious download speeds. He's on an Xbox One. I have a theory that this situation is like a Comcast device given out years ago where the firmware didn't like the type of NICs we
used in the Xbox 360 for a wireless connection. Your testing of a wireless adapter kind of helps solidify that since it's a third-party device. Your guess of about 6 months ago might also go with a firmware update to the device based on what I can find online
(though that isn't as specific as I'd like); from what I can tell, a firmware update was released back in October, and has been likely rolling out to devices since then.

At this time, my suggestion is to use the wireless adapter temporarily. I have a great network engineer looking into what might be going on with this device, and I've passed your information along to him. If I need you to test anything or if I have any updates
on what our next steps are with this, I'll post back here for you.

So you know, you have now done everything I can think of on our end to rule out the console as the issue (aside from wiring directly into the gateway, but my other guy did that and absolutely no difference for him). I've got the right guy
looking into any potential issues that may be creeping up with this device, and you have a good workaround for now. I'll keep you updated! Xbox 360 download speeds slow :)

    Hi,

Somehow my previous post is missing??? Can you restore it?

    1. I will try setting my Firewall setting to "LOW" to see what happens..

    2. I have two Xbox Ones also (an Xbox One, and an Xbox One S). Both stream video fine from my NAS. However, both are downstairs and are located closer to the router.

    3. Please update me on the what you find with the firmware. I'm interested in that firmware update back in October 2016, or it may have been earlier, I don't recall exactly when streaming broke. At first, I thought something was wrong with the videos that
I was attempting to stream. Then, later all videos would not stream properly. The symptom is that the videos are very "jerky."

    Hi,

I did some research and recall that around April 2016 the streaming broke after a firmware update. Can you check if there is a something related to streaming in the firmware upgrade around that time? So it's more around April 2016, rather than October 2016.
