Xbox 360 Controller Drivers Not Working As Intended

Hello,

My 360 controller is not recognized by my PC when its plugged in. When viewing my controller's driver under device managers it says that it is not working properly specifically that it cannot start and does not have enough API resources. However, my controller is recognized by my PC when restarting my computer. This is a persistent problem. Reinstalling the drivers does nothing to fix this issue. This is a recent problem that has only appeared in the last month or so.

I have a few questions that will help me when investigating:

Which version of Windows are you using? (ex: Windows 11, Windows 10, etc.)
Can you verify that you have checked to see if your device needs any updates?
When you're "reinstalling the drivers" are you doing this through the device manager?

I suggest trying to utilize all USB ports, including the USB ports in the back if you're using a desktop PC. I've read that in some instances, users have found success utilizing USB 2.0 ports, which are usually located in the back of a PC, and not USB 3.0 ports.

Is it for the PC? If so you will need to download the Driver for it to work on the PC. Driver Download -

Hi,

Sounds like a faulty controller to me. Especially if it used to work but now it doesn't and the fact that you've tried it on two different computer's.

Downloading drivers won't help as there are no updated drivers. The drivers for the Xbox 360 controllers are built into Windows 10. There no issues with Xbox 360 controllers and Windows 10 to my knowledge.

The only way for sure would be to try another Xbox 360 controller or a third party Xinput supported controller. Failing that an Xbox One or Series X|S controller.

Okay, here's a really stupid solution that worked for me, hopefully will work for you.

I know it *says* 360 controller drivers for windows *7*, but I just installed them and they made my non-functioning Xbone controller work on my Windows 10 installation. You might have to do some driver finagling (go to manage devices, get the unknown controller,
point it to the driver installation path directly), but hopefully it will work for your issue!
