    Hello,

    I have been having quite a bit of trouble getting my Xbox 360 controllers to work with my PC. This may be a bit long but I feel like you're going to need details if I'm going to get this resolved. The problem started when I replaced an Xbox 360 controller
    that broke. I plugged in a new one and it was immediately detected and the driver applied but it wouldn't register in Joy.cpl or any of my games. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. The problem was that the driver wouldn't uninstall and that
    has been preventing me from reinstalling/updating it.

    I then attempted to remove it manually. I cleared it from my System32 folder (which forced me to take ownership of each entry of course) and attempted to remove the registry entries. I ran into a catch though; no matter how many
    times I add or remove permissions from a single Xusb22 entry I cannot get the correct permissions to remove it. The entry is named xusb22.inf_amd64_084fa7bed2e5e3c6 and the driver installer fails because it claims it is already installed. The Xbox peripherals
    drivers are not available in my driver menu when I attempt to manually apply a driver. I have made myself the owner of the entry and given myself all of the required permissions (full control) and it still won't allow me to delete it citing insufficient permissions.
    I have given myself control and permissions higher on the tree and that didn't resolve the issue either. In addition, it has multiple entries for permissions that have contradictory permissions for the users. I receive "Error while deleting key" messages when
    I attempt to remove it.

    I am using Windows 8 64bit. The installers won't function (I've tried several, even the rollbacks) and I don't have an Xbox driver on my device. Please help.

    360 play and charge kit on PC/Windows RT

    There is no controller driver to download for Windows 8 because the driver is already installed as part of the Operating System. This applies to both the Desktop version of Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 8/8.1RT for Windows Surface Tablets.

    If you have a wired Xbox 360 controller, just plug it in, it will work straight away. For wireless controllers you still need a wireless gaming receiver. And yes, the receiver does work with Windows 8RT.

    @SlightJeans3. The Xbox 360 controller both wired and wireless (with a gaming receiver for the wireless pad) are compatible and work fine in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. There is no driver to download for Windows 8 as the driver is already installed and ready
    to go for Windows 8 PC's and surface tablet devices.

    I've been using mine this week to play the PC version of Skyrim. Not only that, but in the coming weeks the Xbox One controller will also be supported for Windows.

    I am guessing the controller is a wired controller as the Wireless controller with Wireless PC adapter comes with drivers on a DVD in the box which work with Windows 8 (I use them myself).

    As mentioned earlier by IceStorm III, a wireless controller with a Play and Charge kit won't work as that play and charge kit only carries power to charge/run a wireless controller with your Xbox 360.

    If it is indeed a wired Xbox 360 controller you are trying to use with Windows 8 you can use the Windows 7 drivers which you can download here:

    Hi,

    Sounds like a faulty controller to me. Especially if it used to work but now it doesn't and the fact that you've tried it on two different computer's.

    Downloading drivers won't help as there are no updated drivers. The drivers for the Xbox 360 controllers are built into Windows 10. There no issues with Xbox 360 controllers and Windows 10 to my knowledge.

    The only way for sure would be to try another Xbox 360 controller or a third party Xinput supported controller. Failing that an Xbox One or Series X|S controller.
