  1. Xbox 360 controller cable smoking

    Hi,

My Xbox 360 refused to switch on, so I removed all the cables and started putting them back in one by one. Starting with the power cable, the Xbox 360 started, so I put back in the HDMI cable and the controller cable. All seemed to be going well and gaming
was underway, until I smelt burning and looked down to see smoke coming from the controller cable where it connects to the controller.

I quickly unplugged everything. A hole has been burnt in the controller cable in the plastic section which plugs into the controller and also houses the LED. I
think what happened here was the the Xbox detected an electrical fault and so refused to start with the controller connected, but I bypassed the fail-safe by starting the Xbox without the controller connected and then plugging it in, but clearly the
    smoke shoudn't have happened regardless.

    Notes on the hardware:

    1. The hardware I am using is all genuine Microsoft components (cables, battery, controller etc).
    2. The battery stopped charging a few years ago, so I've only been able to use the controller with it connected via the cable to the Xbox.
    3. The Xbox continues to start after this incident (without the controller cable connected obviously!)

I think if I replace the controller cable and battery then I will be able to use the Xbox again.

    Questions:

    1. Has anyone else had a similar experience. How did you resolve it?
    2. Should I replace more components? The controller?
    3. Should I send the Xbox off to be electrically tested? Is such a service even available for XBox 360s these days?
    4. Should I just write-off the Xbox 360 off as a liability?

I don't particularly want to discard the Xbox 360 but I also don't want a fire hazard in the house, especially when I have two young daughters.

    Thanks.

    :)

What is the following worth to a potential buyer?

    1. Elite Xbox 360 (120GB hard drive) (The first Elite bundle with no built in Wi-Fi)
    2. Kinect
    3. HD DVD player
    4. Controller (Thumbstick pads are a little worn down as I did use it)
    5. Official Xbox 360 Chatpad
    6. Official Xbox 360 Media Remote (For use with HD DVD player) (Full size remote)
    7. The original Xbox 360 camera
    8. The first official Microsoft wireless headset (with charging cable)
    9. Two official Xbox 360 wired headsets (Both headsets work perfectly but one is missing the padding around the ear.)
    10. Five Faceplates (1 White, 1 Blue, 1 American Flag, 2 Black)

The console and accessories are in awesome shape (single owner, adult owned, smoke free home). Everything works. The 360 has been updated to the latest version. The controller comes with a rechargeable battery pack and cord (Doesn't hold charge for very long but still works). All cables are included.

The Console, Kinect, and HD DVD player all come with their original boxes and papers. Do you think this is worth say $250.

  5. You didn't go wrong there!

Try another 360 WIRELESS controller, you can often find them used for less than 20 bucks. Personally, I would never part with my 360. (The console of the past decade, including current gen) Even if it never worked again, but you do with it as you wish.

  6. This can happen to any wired controller over time.

With the constant bending of the cable where it enters the controller housing, the insulation on the numerous wires can split exposing the copper wire within.

These can then touch each other and cause an electrical short circuit.

Once this happens a new controller is required.

Xbox 360 wired controller with windows 10

In addition to the instructions from XBF Chris J, make sure that you really have a wired Xbox 360 controller, and not a wireless Xbox 360 controller that you connect with a Play & Charge kit cable.

A real Xbox 360 controller that works with PC has a fixed, non-removable cable. If you can unplug the cable from the front of the controller, that cable ONLY transmits power to charge the controller.

No controller data can be transmitted via that charging cable, and therefore the PC can not detect it. But when the controller detects power coming through that cable, it vibrates shortly. Maybe it's that why the controller "only" vibrates, but is not detected
    by the PC.

Laptop not detecting xbox 360 wired controller

Are you sure the Xbox 360 is a wired Xbox 360 controller, and not connected by a separate cable like the play and charge cable? If it is the play and charge cable, it will not work on Windows 10, as it only charges the batteries on a PC. If it is a actual
wired controller, then Windows 10 should detect and then download the drivers if needed.
