Xbox 360 controller button press also changes axis value

I'm encountering undesired axis value changes upon pressing or releasing any Xbox 360 controller button. Other than that, everything else seems to be working as desired: all axes provide seemingly linear values and button presses register properly
except for the mixed signals. All axes properly range from 32767 to -32768. Regardless of axis position, the axis value will deviate up to one or two hundred points, positive or negative, upon pressing any button and will return to the original value upon
releasing the button. The affected axis is not consistent and may also affect two or three axes simultaneously. The problem is most apparent when the axis values are displayed. I’m using the controller with Windows 7. One way of viewing this behavior is with
the “DirectX Software Development Kit (June 2010) XInput SimpleController sample program. This behavior is more difficult to perceive when testing with control panel > Gameport Controllers (gameport.cpl) which uses small graphic indicators only (bars & crosshair)
without showing values, however, slight movement can sometimes be seen. Calibration was performed. I searched for variations of "Xbox 360 controller button press changes axis value" but the most relevant results weren’t related to the problem. Has anyone else
encountered this problem? Is there a known cause or solution?

    :)

Xbox One Controller - Bug in Wireless Mode

OK, so the issue seems to be that the XBox One controller treats each trigger button as a separate axis, while 360 controllers used only one axis for both going from a -1 to 0 to 1 value or something. Some older games seem to have trouble with the new system,
causing this problem. I still need to find a solution, though...

How to change your Xbox 360 console audio setting

The Xbox 360 console automatically determines default audio settings for the combination of TV and cables used. But you can also change the audio settings on your console if you’re using one of the following cables:

    • Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable
    • Xbox 360 HDMI Cable
    • Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable
    • Xbox 360 S-Video/AV Cable
    • SCART adapter (United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand only)

How to change the audio settings

    • First, you need to press Guide button on your controller to go to Settings.
    • Then, proceed to System Settings.
    • Press Console Settings to select Audio.
    • Press Digital Output and select the appropriate output.

Note: Not all options are available for all cables.

Xbox 360 controller button press also changes axis value

It's most likely a mechanical issue, and can't really be fixed, or it could (unlikely) be a driver issue. If it still acts up on your Xbox 360, then it's probably the controller itself. They can be quite finicky sometimes.

I tried to rule out a mechanical problem by knocking the controller around to see if an axis change could be registered but it did not. I also gently pushed the buttons to minimize the possibility of vibrating the joysticks but axis changes would always
occur when pressing a button. I, too, suspect a driver issue but what could it be? I used xinput1_3.dll.

It could be the driver version, or the generic driver that Windows uses could be broken. (Microsoft seems to be good at "It works? That's good enough"). I'd look around on Google to see if anyone else is having issues, or if there's an alternate driver around.
I'd also try a different controller to see if you can replicate the issue. If you can, it's a driver. If you can't, it could just be something with the controller.

What other driver can be used with Windows 7? I believe xinput1_4.dll is for Windows 8.
