  1. XB1X Scorpio - 4K Blu-ray picture quality is worse than 1080p Blu-rays

Recently got a Scorpio and have hooked it up to a 4K tv (Samsung MU7000). Everything 4k-wise is showing as supported and enabled, my TV is registering the HDR when I play 4K content, and games are displaying in 4K HDR and looking great.

4K Blu-rays look very poor though. Looking online the only issue I can find is the HDR problem which a fix was rolled out for on Friday (and I have that update), so this is something new.

Have tried a couple of different films and the picture quality definitely isn't 4K, and when switching between a 4K Blu-ray and a regular 1080p Blu-ray it's immediately very obvious that the 1080p Blu-ray picture (probably with upscaling) looks significantly
better than the 4K Blu-ray picture. It's not a subtle difference, the 1080p Blu-ray looks much, much better (I've compared with 4K and 1080p copies of the same film).

I've done all the troubleshooting tips on here, and the TV Details page on the console shows everything as being ticked and enabled (and as I say, games are looking great).

Oddly I haven't been able to find any complaints online about this particular problem, but I do have a friend who had the exact same experience last night - watched a 1080p blu-ray followed by a 4K one and the 4K one was much lower picture quality, so it
doesn't appear to be specific to my set-up.

Also, I've only watched a couple of things on Netflix since upgrading to UHD but it seems to be putting out a similarly poor picture to the Blu-ray app, ie. not even on a par with a 1080p upscaled Blu-ray, let alone 4K.

Possibly related, the Blu-ray app is also having serious audio output issues. Last night it refused to play a regular 1080p Blu-ray last night because my receiver apparently can't decode it, the message asked me to uncheck 'Allow my receiver to decode audio'.
My receiver and speaker system are both Atmos, and when that happened I booted Gears 4 to check Atmos was still working and it was. The Blu-ray I was trying to play didn't even have an Atmos soundtrack. I then put in a movie that DOES have an Atmos soundtrack
and was unable to get any Atmos from it. Did a hard reset of the console and that sorted it.

On top of that, all the audio switching seems to confuse other apps - OneGuide now doesn't pick up the audio from my Virgin box unless I restart the Virgin box every time I start up the console, and at one point last night after switching from YouTube to
OneGuide the TV audio was completely out of sync by several seconds until I again restarted the console.

I know that's a couple of different issues in one post, but it's all hit me in one weekend and seems like the kind of thing that will continue to be a nuisance until the apps get updated. Are these issues that MS are aware of and fixing?

    :)

The Blu-rays that say Mastered in 4K will have a better overall picture than those that aren't. I don't see that they cost anymore, at least from Amazon. Sony previously did this with a line of pristine masters of DVD's some years ago. Here is the marketing
    speak:

The Blu-ray “Mastered in 4K” collection will set a new standard for Blu-ray HD picture and sound, creating the ultimate 1080p home entertainment experience. Created from the highest quality 4K source materials with new expanded color*, consumers can enjoy
a brilliant picture with exquisite detail using their existing Blu-ray player or PlayStation®3. The Blu-ray “Mastered in 4K” collection is optimized so that 4K Ultra HD TV owners can take full advantage of the new 4K upscaling technology, delivering an outstanding
near-4K experience. “Mastered in 4K” Blu-rays also work with all 1080p HDTVs for spectacular high definition picture and sound.

*Expanded color requires xvYCC-compatible TV and Blu-ray player

    Why “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray?

    • Push your TV to the limit with a high bitrate digital transfer for an immersive visual experience

Notice the "near 4K" phrase? In any case they should look better when played back on equipment that will utilize the high bitrate of the disc.

Xbox one s not playing 4K blurays

I have noticed that since either the latest system update (or possibly Blu-ray app update), normal Blu-ray movies don't upscale to 4k anymore. They only stay at 1080p. I've tried everything, and it only stays at 1080p.

As soon as I go back to the dashboard or play games, it'll revert back to 4k. But as soon as I put a Blu-ray in, back to 1080p. And it was working beautifully before the last system update (the one that released on the 5th August), and Blu-rays all upscaled
    to 4k.

This needs looking in to MS.

Important questions few have asked about XBOX ONE!

Re: X1 and PS4 both being "4k compatible," that does not mean they are 4k Blu-ray compatible, it just means that they can output 4k. So, in other words, there is still the possibility the X1 might only be able to upscale 1080p Blu-ray to 4K, and might not
be able to actually decode and output native 4K Blu-ray.

X1 can output in 4K in other scenarios, though.
