XB1X no longer displays above 720p on 4k tv

hello everyone,

I encountered a strange yet potentially unsolvable issue with my Scorpio edition XB1X.

I primarilay have my XB1X connected to a 55" Vizio 4k UHD tv and everything is great. However when I play more competetive modes in first person shooters I feel more comfortable on my smaller computer monitor so I will swap the HDMI cable over to the 1080
monitor. I was under the impression the Xbox 1 x will automatically detect and change its resolution settings when something like this occurs and it seems to to that most of the time.

This weekend however seemed to be the straw that broke the Xbox camel's back. After laying back in my recliner enjoying some casual PvE content grind in Destiny 2 after a long hiatus, I found I needed to do some PvP for progress towards unlocking something
so unplugged the HDMI cable from my TV and plugged it into my monitor. No problems. I played Destiny 2 PvP for hours until I wanted to return to my big screen. This is where the display breaking issues occur. I simply unplugged from my monitor, and plugged
back into my 4k tv. I waited for the display to switch on but ended up with a "no signal detected" screen. I tried switching back to my monitor but got the same thing. I unplugged my Xbox after power cycling it, left unplugged all night while I slept, woke
up and wasted half my Sunday trying to fix this issue. I have tried everything in the trouble shooting Xbox section, and pretty much everything I could find regarding this issue to no avail.

I have power cycled the Xbox numerous times, unplugged for over a minute and even booted in low res mode (which thankfully worked). After booting in low res mode I assumed this would be the saving grace I was looking for, all I had to do was switch back
the display settings. This is not the case. After turning off and on all of the various checkmark display settings , trying every display resolution I CANNOT get my Xbox to display above 720p on my tv and that's on the HDMI 1 port only (the main port). It
won't go above low res on any other port and I use to plug it into port 4 for convenience of access. Also, tried reconnecting to the monitor. No signal at any display res, not even low res boot. My xb1x somehow had an existential crisis and cannot communicate
properly with my display devices. Also to clarify, My OG PS4 is running perfectly fine at 1080p. My tv is not the issue, my Xbox seems to have lost the ability to detect or communicate properly with my devices.

if anyone has had a similar issue and has a solution other than sending it in for service I would greatly appreciate the feedback.

to clarify , this issue began when swapping the hdmi cable from a 4k display device to a 1080 device then back again.

Thanks in advance for any positive feedback.

:)

2. Xbox X and Samsung UN55HU8550 55 Inch 4K UHD says my tv doesnt support HDR10 for Gaming?

Do you have the XB1X plugged into HDMI1? Try it in that socket, also try turning on HDR+ in picture, special viewing mode. My Samsung only displays Xbox 4k through HDMI1 so that is your first thing to do.

Best display settings?
1. Technically speaking 1080i supioer than 720p but when the 360 is concerned, it's best to stick with 720p or 1080p 2. Unfortunately there are no true 720p TVs on the market. The current "720p TV" actually degrade the image more than 1080p displays 3. Unexpressed
users should stick to YCBCR. It has no effect on black level
I fail to see how 1080i is superior to 720p. 1080i is interlaced. So even at 1080 lines of resolution, only 540 are being displayed at any given time (with half the picture info missing). Besides, if 1080i were superior, why is it that 1080i displays cannot
display at 720p, while 720p displays can display at 1080i?

Try performing a hard reset EXACTLY like this.

Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console.

Thanks genesis,

Already did that multiple times, even left it unplugged all night. I have even tried a factory reset and still no use.

Is there anyone from Xbox support team on these forums? There's not even a phone number I can call, the online chat doesn't work, no response on Twitter. This is pretty disapointing customer care.

gfs1972,

Thank you for the suggestion but I have gone through all of the troubleshooting steps mentioned in that article and more. I seem to have some sort of hardware/ software malfunction. At this point I may have to risk sending in my console for analasys. This
issue will not relent.

Couple more questions about Xbox 360 on 4K TV

Hi thrasher585,

Correct. Screen resolution remains constant regardless of screen size. However, as the screen gets larger, what does change is the number of pixels per inch. This means that pixels need to be increased in size, and, or spaced farther apart in order
to maintain the same number of pixels on the screen. Therefore, a resolution with more pixels (True 4K: 4096 x 2160) will look sharper on practically any sized display compared to a lower HD resolution like 720p (1280 x 720 pixels). 4K displays have more pixels
at their disposal to fill the screen, therefore will always look better than 720p, but the Xbox 360's hardware is limited to only display in 1080p max. Even if you have it connected to a 4K TV, the Xbox 360 will not upscale the graphics to 4K because it is
not capable of doing so.

Bottom line, an Xbox 360 will look better on a 4K TV than a 720p TV but will not display true 4K resolution due to hardware limitations. Any device on a 4K TV will look better than on a 720p only display because of the amount of pixels available.
