XB1 X sees external drive but can't play any game installed to it.

This will be the 4th Xbox I've used with my 4tb WB My Book. My original Day One edition, Halo Edition and XB1 S never had a single issue using the drive. When changing to a new console it was a simple as plugging in the drive, making that console my home
xbox and setting the external to the default install location. It always showed up under the Storage menu under settings, was included in the free space calculation on the main Games and Apps page and was selectable from the drop down menu when sorting.

For the X it recognizes the drive in the Storage menu from settings. Outside of that, the drive is almost invisible. The drive is set to the default install location as well as set to "this is my home xbox". If I select a game that
I know is installed to it the store launches instead. However in the store is why I said "almost invisible" because on the game's store page it will list the game being already installed and a play button will be present where the Purchase/Install button should
be.

I've tried hard resets, signing in and out multiple times and even reset console to factory settings. Nothing has changed this behavior. I even tried attaching an empty HDD and while I could set it to the default install location it would still attempt to install
a game to the internal drive.

Any advice?

Can't play games off of an external hard drive

As the title suggests, I am unable to play any game - digital or disc-based - that is installed on my 2TB external hard drive. It is formatted for XB1 games and apps, and I have been through a number of troubleshooting steps with live chat support, to no
avail. I can't find any really solid information about this online and am becoming increasingly frustrated that this doesn't work when it should. Any ideas here? Just for kicks, here's a list of troubleshooting steps I've already taken:

Power cycling (hard resets)

Clearing persistent storage 3x

Deleting and re-adding my profile from the Xbox

Moving a game that was installed on the internal drive to the external drive and trying to play it

Deleting and re-installing games

More power cycling, including unplugging the external drive during the process.

And probably another thing or two that I can't remember right now.

No matter what I do, all that happens if I try to play a game from the external is that the game's splash screen comes up for a few seconds, after which I get kicked out to the home screen and the game fails to load any further. I'd appreciate any help that
anyone can offer!

 

External Hard Drive no longer detected (Summer Update)

I've got the same problem. Tried all the troubleshooting fixes and it still doesn't recognise the external drive. The internal drive is full and all of my games are on the external drive so my Xbox One is currently useless. This needs a fix soon as I can't
play any of my installed games or use most of the apps.

 

Strange issue

It sounds like it's only allowing the drive for media access, rather than games and apps.

Did you try (a) a different usb port (b) a different usb cable (c) formatting the drive whilst connected to the xbox, setting the drive as the default install location and then downloading the smallest game you own and see if that installs to the drive ?

I have 2 external drives, with my WD drive being set as default install location and games always download and install there by default. I'm also using an xbox one x, running on the "delta" insider preview dashboard.
