XB1 turns TV off when I turn it on

I used to have my cable box connected to my Xbox One, but disconnected it because there was a huge delay in response when using my remote and DVR functions. Anyway, now when I'm watching TV and I power on my XB1 it turns my TV off. Is there anyway to keep
it from doing this?

I too am interested in this: the XB1 should send discrete power On and Off commands, not simply power toggle. What's the latest news on this issue?

Also, I have a few suggestions for the Xbox One Developers/Team:

1) Assuming XB1 is in Instant-On mode, saying "Xbox On" should turn on the console only. Saying "Xbox Everything On" or "Xbox All On" should turn on everything (XB1 console, TV, cable/set-top box, A/V receiver, etc.). Similarly for Off.

2) Using the controller, pressing the Xbox button (or holding the Xbox button for a short time--e.g., 1 sec) should turn on XB1 console only. Holding the Xbox button for a longer time (e.g., 3 secs) should cause everything to turn on (e.g., XB1 console,
TV, cable/set-top box, AVR, etc.). When holding the Xbox button to turn off, there should be three options: turn off console, turn off controller, or turn everything off (e.g., console, TV, box, AVR, controller, etc.)

3) Perhaps, there should also be separate commands for turning on or off each individual device. For example "Xbox TV turn on" and "Xbox TV turn off"; "Xbox Cable Box turn on" and "Xbox Cable Box turn off"; "Xbox, AVR turn on" and "Xbox, AVR turn off", etc.

Xbox One to Windows 10 Streaming Questions

I solved this by having two outputs from my cable box. HDMI to the XB1 and Component straight to the TV. So if my kids want to watch TV I switch the input over to Component and they have full control of the TV while I am streaming games from the XB1.
I can also turn off the tv and stream without a problem. It will initially turn on when I boot up the XB1 but I just turn it off after it starts.

Then I can also watch TV while grinding my RPG games

 

Hi Ms. SoftKitty! I understand this problem completely, because it happened to me, and at one point it was also powering off my PC monitor (because it received commands on the same frequency!) The problem is, most TV's do not have a separate "power on" and
"power off" command, they are one and the same. SO, when your Xbox is turned on, your Kinect sends out the power signal, regardless of whether or not it's actually NEEDED (it can't tell your TV is already on.) As you've discovered, the problem with that is,
if the TV is on, the Power Signal has the opposite effect and TURNS OFF your set. A pain, I know.

The only way to prevent this from happening is by pressing Menu, going to Settings -> TV & OneGuide -> Device Control -> Power Settings and disabling the option for your Xbox to power on your TV when it is turned on.

My wife's console does this (Samsung TV) but it doesn't do it on my console and Panasonic TV and it is for the reason Jaymo1978 mentions, some TV's use the same command from the remote to turn the TV on and off. So when the Xbox One powers up, it sends the
command and turns your TV off if it was already on.

You can do as Jamo mentiones and disable the option altogether or you'll need to remember to use your TV remote to turn your TV off before you turn your console on.

 

Very helpful! One last question though... if I disable that feature I'm assuming my TV won't turn on when I use voice command to turn on my XB1 when everything is off, right?

 

Absolutely correct, yes. That is the one drawback of turning that feature off - it fixes the mixed up "off-on" cycle, but then you're forced to use your remote to power on the TV separately.

Sorry about that, it's not exactly a perfect fix, but it's the only method for the time being.

I had this problem. The fix is when you set up your TV through the setup wizard, it will ask you if you want to send a Toggle for On/Off, or if you want to send an Off command and an On command. Once I changed that when my TV is already on, the Xbox now
sends the On signal and my TV just stays on. That will fix you up right. Cheers!
