Thanks for reaching out. On the Xbox One S you could buy games on a disc or digital. Only the New announced all digital version let you buy games only as digital version.

Both, you can buy digital copies from the xbox store or you can insert a physical disk and install it from there.

If you buy game digitally from store you can download it if you buy disc you can install the game from disc and play it

Nowadays, this is how we all address the following:

Hard copy: Physical copy

DLC/Digital: Digital download

You can use both, and some games are released exclusively via digital download. Disc based games require a mandatory install, as the amount of data used, can be processed faster via hard drive access, rather than scanning the surface on a data heavy Blu
Ray, many times over.

Some digital games that were successful, or via the developer's request, can also be purchased on disc, and are rapidly becoming collectible, due to low production/print numbers.
