X box 360 has trouble reading games however sometimes works sometimes doesn't

Hi all,

i have a second hand xbox 360 which ever since i got it has sometimes read disks sometimes doesnt, it seems to have trouble doing it sometimes, if i leave for 5-10 mins to turn on before using that seems to help but very dodgey once a game is open it works
fine with no issues but it is very touch and go weather it will read the disk i have another broken xbox but the optical drive is fine if i swapped the drive would it fix the problem?

Help: Xbox Game Error "Unreadable Disk"

stops at 60%, sound like an internal HD disc problem, sometimes it doesn't know or tell you, which disc its having trouble reading, since the disc in the tray is mostly used for copy protection test, most of the data gets on the box itself.

Assassin's Creed Revelations won't work

It seems like your console is having trouble reading the topology layers of the disk itself. Sometimes the older consoles have trouble reading the topology of the new format on DvDs, so use the game disc in a friend's console and see if that works.

The answer to your question "would it fix the problem?", maybe.... No one will really know until you try. But, first things first, I guess it's safe to say that both these Xboxes are out of warranty. So, it's not like your going to have an oh-crap-moment
where you say to yourself "why didn't I just send this in for repairs". Also, this could just be the build up of dirt inside the Xbox or drive that could simply be blown out with a can of air. Or, worse it could be some kind of thermal problem with the power
supply. But, it sounds to me like you have something most other people don't have, spare parts. At this point, it is a process of elimination, replacing one part at a time until you can get it working again. However, before you start I suggest you review some
of the online videos about Xbox tear down and reassembly. There is one caveat, at what point does replacing the hardware does the Xbox think its been compromised, or what everyone else calls modded. I believe that as long as you keep the hard drive and system
board (mother board) together you should be OK. So, I don't think changing out the optical should cause a problem and get might one complete Xbox working.

I'm also in the same boat. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes not at all. It even installed first try. Had a similar issue with Revelations but it wasn't as bad as this. Bought a new 360 yesterday and it reads the game without trouble but it cant find the
save games I've transferred from the old xbox 360. Sigh.
