"Would you be so kind as to 'school' me by posting a link to the model you have?"

Sure man. This is the one I have: -

    www.storagereview.com/seagate_backup_plus_fast_portable_review

I get transfer speeds of about 225 MB/s with it, which is faster than any other 2.5" drive you can buy and faster than a lot of 3.5" drives you can buy too.

Speeds mentioned in the tests: -

"The Seagate Backup Plus clocked in at an impressive 237.2MB/s in the write column and 183.4MB/s for read activity."

  3. Thanks for that Sigma, that's me 'owned'.

I've never seen an external with two hard drives in it before.

You learn something new every day and long may that be so.

I'd never heard of it that until recently either to be honest. I assumed that 2.5" external USB powered drives topped out at 2TB. It comes with a second USB cable, as with some PCs you may need to plug in 2 USB cables to send enough power to it, but on the
Xbox One it only needs one. I've got a Turtle Beach Stealth 500X transmitter and one of those Freeview TV receivers hooked up via USB to my console too, so all 3 USB ports are used and I've had no issues.

The fear of hard drive tampering must of played its part in regards to the system having an internal hard drive. You can not use USB sticks to transfer your profile or game saves either which sucks. Microsoft must be really paranoid about people modding
the system and data. The system should of released with a larger hard drive but I am guessing cost played the part. No doubt hopefully sometime in the new year we will see a new line of consoles with larger hard drives. With a long line of yet to released
games it would be stupid not to.

  6. I actually though the reason that the One lacked external storage support at launch was not a technical reason but that they wanted a mod free launch window.

Now that people can get access to the game files on an external hard drive, how long is it going to be before the modders start getting their hooks in.

Then again Microsoft allowing USB storage on the 360 was also something I found surprising.

It was designed to be used while connected to Xbox Live. I don't really feel a need to use USB to transfer saves/gamertags personally, because you can sign into any Live-connected console and your saves sync with that machine when you launch a game. It's
MUCH better than the competing machine in that respect, where you have to manually sync stuff and they only give you 500MB of space, so people are already having to delete saves to upload others. On the Xbox One it just works without you having to think about
it at all, but granted, if you use offline systems it's not ideal - then again, how many people are doing that in 2014?

    @Upinya

When I say I used a underpowered PSU's when building PC's in the past I'm referring to PSU's that cost nearly as much as the One console so that's why I tried to avoid replacing them. If I can get away with the current 800w why spend 200 bucks on a 1000w
or 300 on a 1200w. That mentality is unfortunately how I learned how easy it is to consistently crash an underpowered system.

Do I think MS used the cheapest PSU that would run the system at launch? Yeah. If I do it as a PC hobbyist I guarantee you a profit minded business will do it. People that bought a Kinectless One and only hook up an external will probably never have an issue.
Those with USB powered externals, headsets, Kinect, Keyboard, Mouse, Wheel, factored in with developers pushing the available resources.....we'll have to wait and see.

  9. What are you running Rand that a 800w PSU isn't enough?

    I have a Corsair TX750 and that easily has power for a a i5-3330, a GTX970, two 1tb hard drives, a 1tb SSHD, and a 120gb SSD.

    What does the One have?

The comparison between PC and Xbox One is nonsense in this case. USB ports provide a fixed amount of Voltage and the Xbox One has a fixed amount of USB ports. There's also a maximum amount of power draw that the console can take. It's not like a PC where
you can add extra USB ports, change the hardware etc. and all of a sudden your old PSU doesn't crank out enough juice. Some people are just digging for things to whine about even when they don't exist, lol.

    @Vaynel

I'm running SLI'd GTX980's in my racing rig setup with a 1200w PSU which is overkill but the Corsair 750 I had prior to the last upgrade wasn't cutting it. That setup has numerous USB connected devices (wheel, button box, gaming keyboard, Nostromo, etc)
which leads me to the point that Sigma is making.....

He's absolutely correct but a USB has a max draw that many devices don't come close to using. What happens when you have multiple devices that are drawing the max power while running software that is also pushing the systems hardware.

I can and do monitor my resources on my PC's and laptops so I know how much my systems are being pushed, we can't do that on the One. Sigma apparently believes the PSU has the ability to handle future loads and may very well be correct but we could also
currently be on the edge of the PSU's upper limit. There are far to many unknowns for anyone to say what will happen.

I can't find a confirmation of the One's PSU watts. Seeing anything from 135 to 180 in articles from questionable sources. Anyone confirm? It probably says it on the brick but my rat nest of wires scares me to much to look ;p

Your right, a cat or dog could pull the plug out of the hard drive (highly unlikely though)

The situation I'm about to tell you though is very likely.

A person (let's call him Bob) buys an Xbox One, after six months he decides he needs more space. So Bob goes out and buys a bigger hard drive, takes the old one out, and puts that shiny new hard drive. And then realises he now has to redownload and install
    everything he had.

Bob, so enraged by this comes onto the forums and says "why can't we plug in an external hard drive and just copy the data over?"

If you think that would never happen, take a look on our rivals forum from time to time, that sort of post is quite common. Because when the PS4 owner upgrades their hard drive, they have to redownload or reinstall everything.

  15. If only Microsoft could invent something to move data from one hard drive to another.

Something like, oh I don't know, a transfer cable.
