Buy an external.. they are cheap... FASTER than the oem HDD and you can easily transfer all your games to it for on the go... and if you are worried about a cat knocking of your wires for just an external, what about all your other electronics?

  2. Storage expansion in the new xbox.

My old xbox elite with a 120gb hard drive got the red light error finally, so I just went and bought a new one with Kinect. They were out of the 250gb model, so I just got the 4gb, thinking I'd just put on my old hdd. Guess I should've researched the new
model xbox a bit more. I didn't realize it was a totally different design and you couldn't do that. Can you upgrade the hdd on the new xbox or no? Does a thumb drive work the exact same way as the hard drive if a buy a 32 gb one?

    New Xbox360

Does anyone know if you can upgrade the HDD in the latest model 360 from the 250GB HDD to a 320 GB HDD?I mean if I bought the new one can I either buy a 320 GB HDD or swap my 250GB HDD?

The external option is better IMO. You can plug that external into any Xbox One and access your stuff. You can move all games and non-stock apps to it, so if you ever replace your console for any reason, you don't need to re-download them. USB 3.0 has a
faster transfer rate then SATA-2 (which both the Xbox One and PS4 use). External hard drives can have much higher capacity as you can use 3.5" drives, or 2.5" drives that actually have 2 drives in raid 0 (which is what I have, so I have 4TB of space, but without
having to use external power for the drive). You can use more than 1 at the same time. You don't lose the space on the existing internal because you're not replacing it.

The only disadvantage is that it's not as elegant a solution as having the drive installed internally. I think the cat argument is a bit quirky, lol. I'm not sure that many people would be too worried about that. Wishing for a new Xbox One model that i can change the hdd on myself. :D

We aren't seeing issues now with the PSU because developers aren't pushing the hardware to it's limits and we aren't seeing the accessories pulling power that we may see in the future.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of a PC gamer that builds his own rigs. I agree going SSD and or even 7200 will give you minimal returns in speed but replacing the internal is still the most efficient option for someone looking for an overall speed
    increase.

The people that want their games mobile will be better off with an external, the days of me going to a friends house to play video games ended decades ago so that's a non-issue for me.

For me personally there are no downsides to replacing the internal but plenty of downsides to using an external. As with anything else everyone's situation is unique.

Randver, please expand on "plenty", other than the "pulling power from the PSU", which most don't seem to agree with, and can also be negated by using a powered External if desired, you haven't really made the argument... the "cat" definitely doesn't count

being that I work in IT, I'm well aware of performance boosts, but for a gaming console the ROI will be little to none. The power supply is more then large enough to support multiple externals and accessories and kinect. I can understand someone not wanting
to hook up an internal, but based on console life of 7-8 years. even with a 4TB option it probably won't last all gen

    @markmoore

For me the disadvantages are the space the external takes up ( I have a 360, PS3, One, PS4, PSTV, cable box, SS System, MSI gaming laptop, Roku, HDMI switch all hooked to my primary TV so space is at a premium).

External has no impact on OS loads

Cooling can be an issue with externals unless you're going with the ones that are designed with cooling in mind which are normally more expensive or a docking station.

I've been building PC gaming rigs/racing rigs for more than 25 yrs so I have plenty of first hand knowledge of what happens when you over extend your PSU. I've lost count of the number of times I've made a mess of a rig by trying to squeak by with an under
powered PSU after replacing a GPU.

I agree, at this point it's not an issue but at some point we'll have people plugging in wheels, headsets, externals, Kinects, etc and the power drain will impact performance.

An external powered only by the USB port is never going to be as good as an internal drive.

If you get an external for the One then go for one with its own power supply.

Yes it's another power socket you have to use but it'll be worth it.

so because you undersized your PSU, your assuming MS did the same?

The cat was a bad argument. Granted. I would much rather have a large internal hdd, was what I meant. I dont know how to explain how it would be better with an internal hdd. It would render an external drive "unnescessary".

Being all digital on very slow internet speeds. The external will never be unnescessary. As soon as I download a game some taking 12 hours I copy that baby to my external. Even if I could swap out the internal for a big one I would always back it up with
a copy. I can now leave the external in a drawer ( if you are worried about a cat ) or leave it plugged in. External is still the easiest and best solution.

you'd probably need a minimum 8TB drive to make it through this gen. I can't see MS or any company launching with that in 2013. and upgrading your drive several times is a hassle

Nah. The 4TB external I have that's powered by USB is the fastest 2.5" external drive you can get, and is considerably faster than the internal drive in either the Xbox One or PS4, while offering over 4X the space and being portable.

  15. Really? I find it hard to believe that a drive powered only by what it can draw from a USB port could be as a quick as similar models with their own power supply.

Would you be so kind as to 'school' me by posting a link to the model you have?

Having owned USB only powered and models with their own power-supply on my PC, I've always found the latter to be quicker and more reliable.
