  1. Wired ethernet connection problem

    H All,

I have set up a basic network in my house, it's a virgin media hub 4 connected to a TP Link TL-SG1024D. Everything connects fine apart from my son's Xbox series S. If you test the connection it just says 'cannot connect to your DHCP server'. If you plug the same connection into a TP link 4 and then wired link to the xbox it connects but the speed is slower than using in through the wifi. Does anyone have any idea oh how I could get the xbox to use the wired connection?

    Thanks Rich

    :)

    Wired ethernet connection problem

Hello Richard C, My name is David. I am an independent advisor, happy to help you today.

If your son's Xbox Series S is having trouble connecting to the DHCP server when connected directly to your TP-Link TL-SG1024D switch, but works when connected through a separate TP-Link router, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Ensure proper cable connection: Confirm that the Ethernet cable connecting the Xbox Series S to the TP-Link switch is securely plugged in on both ends. Sometimes, loose connections can cause connectivity issues.

Check DHCP settings: Access the administration interface of your Virgin Media Hub 4 (usually done through a web browser) and verify that DHCP is enabled on the router. DHCP is responsible for assigning IP addresses to devices on your network, so it needs to be enabled for your Xbox to obtain an IP address automatically.

Power cycle the devices: Turn off both the Virgin Media Hub 4 and the TP-Link switch. Unplug the power cables from both devices and wait for about 30 seconds. Then, plug them back in and power them on. This power cycling process can help clear any temporary glitches that may be affecting the network connection.

Try a different Ethernet port: If possible, connect the Xbox Series S to a different Ethernet port on the TP-Link switch. There could be a problem with the specific port you are currently using, so testing with a different port can help determine if that is the case.

Reset network settings on the Xbox: On the Xbox Series S, you can try resetting the network settings to their default values. To do this, go to the Settings menu, select Network, and then choose Network Settings. From there, select Advanced Settings, and finally, select Restore to Factory Defaults. This will reset all network settings on the Xbox, so be aware that you will need to reconfigure any custom network settings afterward.

Update firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for both the Virgin Media Hub 4 and the TP-Link switch. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues with certain devices. Visit the manufacturers' websites for instructions on how to update the firmware.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be an incompatibility between the Xbox Series S and the TP-Link switch. In such cases, you may need to consider using a different switch or contacting the manufacturer's for further assistance or troubleshooting

    Best regards.

Did you plug something else into the cable you are using and verify that it is working, cause it could be that the ethernet jack is not working on your Xbox One. If that is the case, you may need to have it repaired.

Even though your wifi is working pretty good right now, I have always been a fan of using a cable if you can.
