  1. Windows Sonic virtual surround sound option missing

I recently try to setup the headset audio to use Windows Sonic on Xbox One, but there is no "use virtual surround sound" option, there is only one option available after select Windows Sonic for Headphone, that is "Using HDMI or optical audio headset". It
seems different from what many web sites had described or MS own developer forum

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/mt807491(v=vs.85).aspx
, that there should be two options after select Windows Sonic.

Is the latest Xbox update removed the option or something wrong with my system?

    :)

    Hello,

Windows sonic is virtual surround so 5.1 if you want 7.1 , you have to purchase codec dobly atmos on the Xbox store or Microsoft store.

Surround Sound Headset into Elite Controller?

You're in luck! You don't need a special surround headset, as there now is a new sound format being broadcast to the controllers called "Windows Sonic".

This is a virtual surround format, that allows normal stereo headsets to produce surround sound by delaying and echoing the surround channels in a way, your ear actually hears them from behind, above or wherever.

Since you only have two ears, two speakers can be enough to fool your ears into hearing things from different positions besides only left and right. Your two ears detect the position from a sound by the short echoes and delays each ear hears compared to
the other ear. So instead of having a dedicated speaker in the position from where the sound is coming from and having your ear figure it out that that specific speaker in that position is making the sound, the Windows Sonic format already pre-calculates the
delay from when one ear is supposed to hear a certain sound compared to the other, so your ears are fooled into hearing positional surround sound with "only" a stereo headset.

You should find the setting via Settings -> Display and sound -> Audio output.

  5. I just spoke to Xbox Support about this, It turns out that the Virtual Surround Sound was in Beta ready for the Xbox One X, and the Beta has now expired so the option has been removed for now.

Windows Sonic / Dolby Atmos for headphones: proper in-game settings

    So....

Since nobody has given an answer yet (the link for xbox troubleshooting doesnt even mention in-game settings), let me try to explain whats happening. Windows Sonic as well as Dolby Atmos for Headphones downmix a surround signal to stereo in a way that makes
it seem as if you're listening to surround sound. If you set your Game audio to Headphones the Game will not output 7.1 Surround sound but either pure Stereo or already have done the work that sonic is supposed to do. So, if your game has built in surround
sound (or binaural sound) for headphones turn off sonic and use that or use the speaker settings and turn on sonic. Dont turn on both or sonic will try to make a surround sound out of a binaural stereo signal. Trust me, that's not a good listening experience.
