Windows Live, PSN and 2K hacked

I still say these guys are lieing about this.

 

Where are you guys seeing the list? I can't find it. In any case, if any one of us were affected, I'd imagine that the respective services would contact those users in some way.

I should think its okay to post that, I mean its to help each other out and if it gets removed due to it holding sensitive information then it can easily be googled. I trust anyone here has good intentions myself but that's just my opinion. I've mass messaged
a bunch of folks with the same link to spread the word.

 

The hackers attorney advised them to take down the list per their Twitter account so all you'll be able to find now are people posting screen shots of the original list.

I don't think it actually happened but if it did it'll be months before any of the affected businesses notify us.

 

But Google has a authorized device list, bit of a pain, but I've received notifications from Google saying someone was trying to access my email, and because they weren't on my device list they were denied access.

 

Okay, I just finished pouring down the list and I'm in the clear. Of course, that's to be expected. I know how to set effective passwords.

The list only contained a small amount of the information they are claiming to have stolen. They claim to have 200k Live accounts, 500k credit card numbers, etc.

You can have the most effective passwords in the world but if they are being stolen from the source then it's irrelevant, just don't use duplicate user/password on different sites so if they do steal your info they only gain access to one site.

 

Well, if they can steal it from the source Randver, what's the point of changing the passwords at all if they're going to be null and void anyways?

 

I highly doubt they hacked Microsoft, the us government agencies needed to get help from lobbying congress to access the data in the first place. At least that's what I read. If it was that easy none of us would be on here talking.

My devices are registered with Google and Microsoft so they both have that feature. Well worth doing. Uses mac address.

 

MS does it as well? i haven't seen any options for it.

Null and void? The companies that have been compromised aren't telling us to change our passwords and aren't requiring us to submit new ones so changing them will protect you. I'm not a 100% sure what you meant.

We can only do so much to protect ourselves but if the companies that are entrusted with protecting our data can't protect it then we lose in the end. My Rift MMO account was compromised when Trion was hacked, had to change credit card after Target hack,
still waiting to see if Home Depot hack will impact my CC.....all three of those were out of my hands, nothing I could have done on my end to prevent the lose of my info other than not shopping there.

@Randver the best option you have other than not shopping at those places is to use prepaid CC/Debit cards. After the Sony attack in 2011(I didn't have a PS+ sub) I made the decision to only use prepaid for any online service. That's why I dont have Netflix
because they dont accept prepaid cards and dont do gift cards for some strange reason. I was also impacted by the Target hack last Christmas but all they got was 37 cents because I used a prepaid card. Of course it costs a few bucks to get one but you can't
place a price on peace of mind.

 

I would expect MS to encypt their password its standard practice in all languages, in C# (A Ms language) they have a built in encryption library, so I would be massively suprised if the stored MS passwords weren't encrypted, and easy way for the hacker
to convince people would be to publish how they decrypted the passwords.
