  1. Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender

I have a new desktop computer running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit version, I have installed Media Center following the instruction here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/feature-packs. I
can get through the initial parts of the setup, it hangs on the page with multiple checkpoints on the final checkpoint "Connecting to your Extender". It will stay on this page for a while before eventually going to a page showing "Extender Connection Failed".
Meanwhile on the 360 it shows a page stating "Connection Failure", this error shows up right away on the 360 even before the error on the computer. After proceeding beyond this step if I go into Media Center on the computer and view the extender settings page
it shows the 360 with status "Set up but not available", and when the connection begins to attempt to be made from the 360 the status changes to "Ready to use". Of course the connection cannot be made and fails on the 360 and on the computer it goes back to
    the original status.

Here is a rundown of troubleshooting steps I have tried so far:

    -Restart both computer and 360

-Add Windows Firewall exception for Media Center (one was not made automatically so I had to manually add it)

    -Disable antivirus software

    -Disable Windows Firewall

-Boot into Safe Mode and attempt to setup connection (attempt failed even earlier than in previous attempts on checkpoint page)

    Additional Info:

This is a 360 that has worked as an Extender previously. The previous computer is a laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit version. I did successfully delete the previous extender connection from both the computer and the 360. All equipment is running
through the same network however the desktop is connected as an Ethernet connection, while the laptop is connected via WiFi. To ensure that this was not a new error created by the removal of the previous connection I attempted to reconnect the laptop to the
360 and was successful in making a new connection. Both computers are running Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security.

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

Streaming Media From Windows Media Player to Xbox 360

During Windows Media Center Extender setup, Windows Firewall has to be updated to allow communication between the Windows Media Center-based computer and the Xbox 360 console. If the Windows Firewall service has been stopped, these updates can't occur. Therefore,
the Windows Media Center Extender Setup program won't install.(from the support site)

No, it is down again. Looks like the hardware updated itself and now cannot be undone. Using a Surface Pro 1 with all Windows updates currently available for Windows 8.1

  4. Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender

Hey there, AgentKentorGoT! This is a complex issue. Hopefully we can get you sorted out!

To help you out the best, I'd like to get the event ID that your computer is throwing when this fails. That will help me better understand what the real issue is. You'll want to do a search for View event logs on your 8.1 PC after trying to
set up the Extender again (this will make it the most recent error). Once that opens, you'll want to hit the arrow on the left to expand the option Applications and Services Logs. Then, under that, hit Media Center. There
will be options across the top center now that say things like Level and Event ID. You should see an Error level with an Event ID listed to the side of it. Please post back that Event ID.

Once I have that, I can see what the cause is and help you figure out why your PC is not wanting to connect to your 360! Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender :D

  5. OK I cleaned everything out and ran a new setup. When I open the logs it does not show an error it just tags it with:

    Level - Warning

    Event ID - 592

And under general it states "Your Media Center Extender was set up successfully, but failed to connect (timed out after 180000ms)."

Thank you for you help with this.

  6. Perfect! Thank you so much for that. That helps me out so much.

Does your new 8.1 PC happen to have any biometric apps installed on it? These are apps that support fingerprint scanning or the like. You could have Asus Data Security/Manager or Smart Logon, HP Smartpass Fingerprint Reader, Lenovo Autolock or ThinkVantage
Toolbox, or any preloaded Sony/Vaio software. All of these can cause that specific warning.

With having a new setup, I just want to make sure that I understand this fully. You do not have an antivirus installed on it currently now, correct? There are several antivirus programs that will throw this event ID, too, even just being installed
but disabled. If you do have one installed on the new setup and don't have any biometric apps, please do uninstall that fully and try again.

Hopefully this helps you out! Please post back your information or results. Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender :)

  7. No biometric apps of any kind.

I did have antivirus installed as I mentioned in my first post. To test your resolution I did fully uninstall the antivirus. I attempted a new setup first uninstalling the extender setup from the computer and disconnecting on the 360, followed by restarting
both the computer and 360. Attempted new setup with no antivirus installed, but no change in result. The setup still failed and a check of the event logs still shows a warning with event id 592.

That's really weird, Agent. :/ Did you install 8 onto that PC yourself, or did it come with it?

  10. Alright, I'll reference that if we have to come back to that.

Instead of using Media Center, do you have any objections to using Windows Media Player to stream? It should use the System Video and Music Players instead of Media Center.

Also, nice set up. Totally jealous. Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender :D

  11. Yeah it's a work in progress. Next comes the video card ... hmm I think I just heard my wallet crying.

Would you believe it had not even occurred to me to try? I have now successfully tested that to show that it does work. I have very little objection to using Windows Media Player over Windows Media Center, other than the fact that I had to pay extra to get
the Media Center Pack since Windows 8.1 does not come with it built in like previous versions of Windows. Mostly I like the organization of Media Center and the fact that I can boot the 360 directly into Media Center by just hitting the Media Center Button
on the 360 remote. While Media Player so far has been a viable substitute, I would still prefer to figure out how to fix Media Center.

  12. I'm very happy to see that at least WMP is working for you. That's a step in the right direction, and means that it is possible to stream.

There is a downside. I cannot think of anything else to get MC working other than reinstalling Windows. It's generally my last step. And the reason why I say reinstall Windows instead of just removing and downloading the MC app is because of the way MC writes
its registries. It is kind of difficult to remove, and reinstalling tends to fix it easier than trying to remove all the registries.

If you do decide to do that, please try to run Media Center before you install anything else. If it works, add programs slowly to see which one may cause issues with it. If it doesn't, then we've got you sorted out!

I know it's a pain, but it really is the last thing I can think of. :/ You can give it a try, or stick with WMP for now. Let me know what you do decide on doing! I appreciate your patience while we slowly figured this out on here. Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot setup Xbox 360 as Extender :)

Well, I guess it's time to start backing everything up then. It'll take some time to straighten stuff out, but I'll post back after I've completed to let you know what happened.
