Windows 11: Xbox Controller broke yesterday and it shows up as an unknown device. It says...

    Hello!

I've been using my Xbox One Afterglow wired controller for several months now perfectly fine, no problems. In fact, I've been using it with Windows 11 just fine too. However, for some reason, since yesterday it doesn't work and when I plug it in it vibrates but doesn't light up. It is now an "unknown device" in my device manager. The picture shows that and the error code I received. I've tried updating the driver, uninstalling and scanning for hardware changes, rolling back updates, and I even reset my PC. I didn't do anything different since 2 days ago when it worked and yesterday when it broke.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jet

Windows 11: Xbox Controller broke yesterday and it shows up as an unknown device. It says it's a driver problem.

Have you tried with another controller because if you reset your pc it should work fine otherwise it could be the PCI card on the motherboard. I had a different issue with the ethernet on-board Realtek controller. So just to make sure when you mean reset erase your pc back to factory default's right ?

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

Your controller may need to be repaired or replaced. I recommend talking to the controller manufacturer to see if you still have a warranty. If it's a problem with a driver, they can help you with that too.

Xbox series controller not recognized on PC using USB C connection

Thanks! But I just updated Windows yesterday for the sole purpose of making the controller work, it's up to date. I tried uninstalling the device and restarting, but every time it displays the same error: Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). When I try to solve it using the problem solving tool, it says it couldn't find a solution.

Problems setting up wireless Xbox 360 controller for Windows 7

Hi there. This issue commonly occurs when the Gaming receiver you have purchased is not an official Microsoft product. It might be possible to get your device to function as it should. But, if this is indeed a nock off device, it may not be possible to
get it to work. In which case you should seek a refund.

You didn't say if your device shows up in Windows Device Manager? If it does, and shows as an 'Unknown Device', here is a possible fix:

    Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unknown Device

    Go to Properties

    Go to the Drive tab

    Click on Update Driver...

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Windows Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349

    Update Driver Warning, Click Yes.

Let us know how you get on.

Why won't windows 11 install Xbox controller drivers?

    Hi Benjamin Woodford,

Welcome to Microsoft Xbox Community Forum. I understand that you are having trouble installing Xbox controller drivers on your Windows 11 PC.

Based on your description, it seems that your Windows 11 PC is not installing the Xbox controller drivers properly. This can cause the controller to show up as an unknown device in the device manager, and prevent you from using it with Steam or other games. There are several possible causes and solutions for this issue, which I will explain below.

One possible cause is that your Windows 11 is not updated to the latest version. Windows 11 is still in its early stages, and it may require some updates to fix bugs and improve compatibility with Xbox controllers. To check for updates, please follow these steps:

    - Click the Windows button and open Settings.

    - On the left panel, select Windows Update.

    - On the right panel, choose Check for Updates.

    - If there are any updates available, download and install them. The PC will ask you to restart to finish the process.

Another possible cause is that your Xbox Accessories app is outdated or corrupted. This app is essential for the proper operation of the Xbox controller on a Windows system, and it may need to be reinstalled or updated in Windows 11. To do so, please follow these steps:

    - Open the Microsoft Store app on your PC.

    - Search for Xbox Accessories and click on it.

    - If the app is already installed, click on the three dots icon and select Update. If not, click on Get to install it.

    - Once the app is updated or installed, launch it and connect your Xbox controller to your PC.

    - Follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware of your controller if needed.

A third possible cause is that your Xbox controller driver is incompatible or corrupted. This can happen if you upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11, or if the driver was damaged by some software or hardware issue. To fix this, you need to uninstall and reinstall the driver manually. To do so, please follow these steps:

    - Connect your Xbox controller to your PC using a USB cable or a wireless adapter.

    - Right-click on the Windows button and select Device Manager.

    - Expand the category of Universal Serial Bus devices or Xbox Peripherals, depending on how your controller is connected.

    - Right-click on the device that has a yellow icon or says Unknown Device, and select Uninstall Device.

    - Check the box that says Delete the Driver Software for this Device, and click on Uninstall.

    - Disconnect your controller from your PC and restart your system.

    - After restarting, connect your controller again and wait for Windows to automatically install the driver.

If none of these solutions work for you, there may be some other issue with your system or your controller that requires further investigation. IWith that, kindly provide us with these details below:

    - The model and serial number of your Xbox controller

    - The version and build number of your Windows 11

    - The error message or code that you see when trying to update or use the controller

    - The steps that you have tried so far and their results

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
