Windows 10 Startup Flashing Taskbar after XBox Service Installed

I installed Xbox game pass, been playing games successfully, until a month or so ago, now when Windows 10 starts up, it takes 5 minutes of a blank screen (after login), with the taskbar flashing showing nothing but the Start button - windows is still responsive as the Task Manager can still be brought up with ctrl alt delete.

The only way to stop this seems to be to disable the Storage Service under services.msc.

How can I fix this permanently ? Is it the fact games are installed on my non boot system drive ?

    :)

Windows 10 Startup Flashing Taskbar after XBox Service Installed

    Hi

Did you read my post ?

"If you're on windows 11 steps are the same, you just need to download windows 11 ISO"
Look at the title of my post

"Windows 10 Startup Flashing Taskbar after XBox Service Installed"

Do you think I am using Windows 10 or 11 ? Generic messages to tell me to re-installs, that you hope will fix 95% of peoples problems are not you giving me support, they are simply fobbing me off.

I tried the SFC tool, and wouldn't you believe it, surprise surprise, just like the "windows troubleshooters", it did not fix anything. Lets look at the problem, when I disable a service for windows start up - by forcing the service to be manual and not auto, and then reboot, everything works perfectly.

Then when I put the service to auto - so that it starts at startup the symptoms occur.

Now, seeing as I am not the only one who has this problem, I would say its not my system, its the service starting up at Windows startup that is causing the problem. Yes, sounds like a bug in the storage service, or a consumer of the aforementioned service ie xbox. This is a simple, reproducible bug, that needs to be fixed. I would suspect its because the xbox games are not installed on the main drive, I have a hard link from the c:/users/myuser folder to a different hard drive to save space for backups etc, and the non system hard drive is not being started immediately on windows startup, so the startup of the Storage Service seems to be performing a synchronous poll waiting for it, rather than wait for an interrupt or something, the code is sitting in a refresh GUI mainloop waiting for the non system drive with the games installed on, to be available.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I am on Windows 10.

I have run the SFC tool, and also re-installed xbox game services. Neither has fixed the issue. When I turn off the Storage Service under services.msc everything works fine on boot up, when it is enabled my task bar flashes for 2/3 minutes.

I have 6 hard drives/SSDs in my system , I believe this is to do with the fact the Storage Services is waiting for a hard drive/SSD to be initialized at start up to access some files/data. It must be hitting an error as the drive/SSD is not ready, eventually when the system has started up with al ldrives etc the storage service can find the files it needs from the late initialized drive/SSD.

This is related to the storage service, because I can control this effect by enabling/disabling it. It only started happening when I installed xbox games service.

Hi and thanks for reaching Microsoft Xbox gamer's community. My name is Josef.
I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft Xbox user like you.

Hope you're doing great today Marcus

That's odd, let's try fixing it

I'm thinking 2 options worth to try

    1. Run the SFC tool to repair possible system corruptions :

    2. Perform an in-place upgrade for your system :

If you're on windows 11 steps are the same, you just need to download windows 11 ISO :

I'll be waiting for your feedback

Windows 10 Startup Flashing Taskbar after XBox Service Installed

    Hi,

Right I tried all this - and it has not solved my problem. I re-installed Windows at the end, and it still does this. When I disable the service "Storage Service" after running services.msc the problem goes away at next boot up. Can someone jus ttell me how to fix this - I have to wait 5 minutes before I see any icons on Windows after logging in. This is a bug like something out of the 1990's Windows 3.1 days.
