Personally, I have no need for "Backwards Compatibility". Because I still have my Xbox, Xbox 360. I understand why some want it, and perhaps even need it. (Because I traded in my OG Xbox to get the Xbox 360). But I ended up going out and re-building
(had to buy each part separately to save money, Console, cords, controllers) my OG Xbox. Never again will I trade in a console to purchase the next generation's console.

With that being said, I hope it comes for those who want it.

What console is there not an emulator for? There may be one missing for a Sega or Nintendo system that I'm not aware of but they exist for the last gen they exist and most the older consoles have multiple emulators.

There's no Xbox emulator. There's no 360 emulator. There's no PS3 emulator. There are attempts at the first and last, but they are a far cry from what is required for complete emulation.

RPCS3 for the PS3, Xenia for the 360 and multiple ones for the Xbox.

They are all functional so I'm not sure why you think they don't exist. They can't play every title on those systems but you're tech savy enough to understand that isn't the goal of these one or two man development teams it's simply for proof of concept.

They have already done the difficult stuff now it would be just a matter of throwing money and a full time development team behind it. There was interview with the guy doing the 360 emulator and his slow progress was more out of fear of legal action than
anything else.
They are all functional so I'm not sure why you think they don't exist.
They aren't functional. PCSX2 is functional.
Proof of concept != emulation. Because a subset of conditions can be met does not mean an emulator is functional, and it certainly doesn't mean one can be made to work on the Xbox One's APU. To run PCSX2 requires a moderately
powerful PC, ones with significantly faster cores than Xbox One's APU has.

Handwaving by saying, "Well, it can play Frogger 2 so it must be possible," doesn't fly when it comes to emulation.

7. I suppose there was a chance, right up until the moment Halo MCC releases. After that, no, there won't be any BC. The whole industry is going to sit up and take notice when the sales numbers for MCC start pouring in. Why give it to you free, when they
can rework and remaster it, then re-sell it to you? And actually, I think it's a great idea. The industry seems creatively bankrupt right now, so I'll take newly minted classics over some of the pap coming down the pipe right now.

Was it actually Frogger? I couldn't remember I though it was Dig Dug.

If your going to develop an emulator you're going to use a game with the fewest lines of code just for ease of debugging. Whatever the arcade game was the fact is it worked, the emulator read the code and the game ran.

My point is the tech isn't the stuff of sci-fi. It now requires a full development team to optimize and polish which Microsoft has the ability to provide. The PS3 has software emulators for both the PS1 and PS2.

I've never used PCSX2 but my understanding was that it was capable of both software/hardware emulation and it was the software emulation that required the higher CPU requirements. So to say the hardware in the One would be an issue is premature because we
don't know what the options are or what the requirements would be.

emulator that requires significant resources to create. People barely used original Xbox titles on the 360.
PS1 is a device from 1994. ePSXe ran acceptably on a Pentium M. It was easy enough
when the PS3 launched 12 years later.

Full PS2 emulation on the PS3 took about five years to add, is not open, and does not work with discs. Sony is recouping the cost to create the emulator by locking out PS2 discs and requiring those who want to play classic PS2 games to re-buy them. At that
point, why bother? Why not push devs to do HD re-releases?
It requires a fairly beefy CPU just for the games to execute, regardless of what mode the graphics are run in.
The hardware on Xbox One is a fixed quantity. It's not like a PC where if it's slow more can be thrown at it. It's far more responsible to note this up front than assume it can do something that is difficult for today's PC CPUs which already far
outclass it.

Perhaps the emulators aren't to easy to implement, hence the reason for their removal on later versions of the PS3. It's also the reason that not all games supported it on the 360 when it was released. Even on the PC, emulators are often unreliable and buggy.
I just don't see the need for it. Easiest way in my opinion is to keep you 360 or as in my case, buy the games on PC. Picked up all the arkham games for like $15 for all three on steam, all the far cry games for like $11 I think it was. Personally I don't
think BC is on the list of things that will come to Xbox. But hey who knows.

@Dufful

The emulator that was removed from the PS3 was the one that supported disc and I agree with Ice that their isn't a financial incentive for them to do emulators that support disc. They'd rather us re-purchase the old games as digital content and use our old
last gen disc as coasters.

@Ice

You do realize that the vast majority of the time we agree it's just that I tend to make a general statement that is factual but I leave out the boring tech stuff ( and carpal tunnel inducing typing ) and then you tear it apart and require me to counter
with the tech stuff which leads us full circle.

So in summary....every console has a working emulator for the PC (a game written for that console has run on a PC). Can the One support the current 360 emulator? No. Will the One hardware support an emulator? Yes (in my opinion). Does it make financial sense
for MS to develop it? Debatable, I personally would buy digital 360 games to play on the One, the PS3 continues to release PS1 and 2 games so apparently there is a market.

Will xbox one play 360 games?

No, the Xbox One is not backwards compatible and won't ever be.
13. maxen Win User

Virtual Xbox 360 games from bought from marketplace. Yay or nay for Xbox one?

You can play some Xbox 360 games on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. A full list of those games is here:
www.xbox.com/.../backward-compatibility

However, games for which there are both an Xbox One and Xbox 360 version are unlikely to ever be made backwards compatible, so if you wish to play that game on Xbox One you would need to purchase, either digitally or on disc, the Xbox One version of the
game.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have further questions.

Is it safe to assume that Microsoft will not add backwards-compatibility for regular XBox games (not 360)?

also it depends on the developer if they still around and to what ever company that has the rights now for them to do it. microsoft have to ask them if it okay to make it backwards compatible. some companies have already said no to backwards compatible games
to the xbox one.

Older games

Lego Lord of the Rings is backward compatible. It was one of the last batch of games to be made backward compatible. As for Need For Speed Carbon, that isn't compatible, and won't be ever backward compatible either. As Smwutches stated, the backward compatible program has ended, so no more games are being added.
