WIll the way I get real life money to buy gift cards affect my reputation on Xbox One X?

So I bought something, put an identical (but broken) one in the new one’s box, brang it back, kept the new thing and bought a gift card...am I in trouble on Xbox Live and real life?

Well, you would be in trouble with the retailer. Typically consoles are serialized (have an individual serial number) so the fact you returned a different device than what you purchased would normally trigger the retailer to not accept your return. So
not sure why xbox live would be impacted unless you did this to a Microsoft store. But yes, in real life you committed fraud. And for a few hundred dollars. At a minimum that would be a misdemeanor.

You can buy cash cards now with real life money from the X-Box games store though. Saves you grinding for it.

Offering to buy/sell/trade real life currency is not permitted including not limited to gift cards, real money, accounts and other possessions but can you show me somewhere in the TOS/COC that does not mention a real life item? Its not against the rules. Trading ingame currency for a item(using game mechanics) is not mentioned only real life currency and items.

You cannot use a gift card to buy another gift card. Such as Xbox. As it don't work that way. You have to either have physical money (like a credit card) to buy things on the Xbox store or buy an Xbox gift card in the stores.
