Will Rare survive without Kinect?

So apparently 16 employees have been "let go" from Rare studios, thanks in part to terrible sales of Kinect Sports Rivals.

Seeing how Microsoft have so far squandered one of the best development studios there was (Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye) what changes would you like to see made? What projects should Rare be given?

and its a SERIOUS pain in the *** to beat, never mind survive. in order to beat it, you just have to survive it without getting busted by the cops

The fact that you are making the assumption that one lone game caused 16 people to loose there jobs is not fair. People loose there jobs all the time, the tech industry is brutal, like any industry, there is no loyalty.

 

Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo.

...and stay far away from Kinect.

 

You can't mention Goldeneye and such games when you think of Rare anymore.

MS didn't squander this company....it was a shell of what they were back in the N64 days and has been that way for a while.

PDZ was not nearly as good as either Goldeneye or PD on the N64. Never played Kameo, but it's partially MS fault as well.

People might challenge me on this, but I think we all know many of the ppl who play the Kinect Sports games and such are "casual" gamers....those who had Kinect 1 by some chance.

I don't think many of the early adopters that bought the X1 are Kinect Sports heavy fans...and MS shouldn't have pushed such a game out so soon. I don't think many of the Wii girl type ppl have an X1 yet, so why make a Kinect Sports game right now.

 

@kingvas - a fair point, and of course I'm sorry to see people facing hardship. But Rare ARE on a downwards spiral, a cold seller like KSR undoubtedly does not help. I've heard rumour of a new third-person Perfect Dark which could be great; I hate seeing
names I grew up with drop by the wayside.

 

Wasn't KSR intended as a launch title? And admittedly, my last exposure to a Rare title was a gen before 360. I'm just nostalgic to a fault.

 

With Phil Spencer, they have a chance, but I have a feeling they wont unless they really knock it out of the park. They need to do something that people want, and Phil cannot hold them back.

 

As they said before the release of Kinect Sport Rivals.Rare got other projects,even some that doesn't involve Kinect....

 

Microsoft ran Rare into the ground. Their early 360 efforts were great in my opinion. I even loved the first 2 Kinect Sports games. It just seems like now their a shell of what they used to be under Nintendo. Microsoft has a ton of potential with Rare stuff.
Kameo, Perfect Dark, Conker, Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini, but their ignoring it all.

 

I don't know why IGN has been doing their articles on Rare the way they have (I honestly think IGN just HATES Kinect), but the layoffs were not due to poor sales, but rather a normal thing after the completion of a major project. 150 people were working
on KSR during its peak, and now that the game is out, there is nothing for most of those people to do. So Rare will lighten its payroll, come up with its next game, and then starting building it. At some point they will need to beef up payroll once the development
is in full swing, but then they will lose some people after that game is done.

This is completely normal in the game development industry.

 

Remember all the great games Psygnosis used to make? Alundra, Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast?Then Sony turn them into SCE Liverpool with only 2 racing franchises to work on, before they got given the axe. I can't help but be protective of my British studios.
